Saathiya, does not proclaim itself to be an extraordinary love story. Probably thats what leaves an impact on the viewers, atleast it did on me.
The beauty of this movie lies in its simplicity and the matter-of-fact approach to life. A very down to earth movie, with not an ounce of glamour in it. The simplistic approach not only lies in the story and the milieu but also in the appearances of the characters. Rani Mukherjee plays a middle class girl and looks very much so. Thank god for that! How many times have you groaned watching a village belle dolloped with layers and layers of paint! Rani manages to look unpretentious yet lovely. And Vivek Oberoi...well needless to say, looks handsome and cute in a childish way which probably makes him so endearing.
The Plot
It depicts a young love blossoming in the trains of Mumbai (I think its Mumbai...excuse me if I am incorrect!) This is perhaps the most heartwarming experience of watching Saathiya. No extravagant sets, no fussy costumes, marvellous acting by all the characters involved...everything is so natural that it seems more like a home video!
Love then leads to marriage and to its little complexities. It makes one realise that the feeling of love is not based on passion alone but also trust and understanding. And a marriage can be blissful only if an effort has been made by both the partners involved. Probably thats what mature love is all about. Yeah yeah..we know that...youd probably condone...but how many of us have turned trivial matters into a mammoth argument due to lack of consideration and faith?
Marriage is not exactly a bed of roses..it comes along with its fair share of thorns! And rightfully so!
The Cast
Rani is no doubt a fine actress and plays her part so effortlessly that it makes you marvel at her acting skills. This is the first time I have seen a Vivek Oberoi movie...and I think he has done a pretty good job, considering the fact that he is only 2 movies old.
Ranis mum played by Tanuja, has acted brilliantly. She seemed perfectly at ease with the surroundings...looked every bit a middle class housewife.
The Music
This is the major draw, which led me to watch the movie. AR Rahman has done a fabulous job once again. Moreover the choreography of all the songs is beautiful. Especially Aye Udi Udi which is absolutely delightful to watch. They seem to have had a blast whilst dancing to the vocals of Adnan Sami. Makes you want to join them in their wilderness! The backdrop is the couples home, which is more of an incomplete structure of a house...a few pillars of bricks here and there and the open skies above...yes..your right ..no roof! Oh hum dum has an equally catchy beat...pictured on Vivek on a bike, with a close-up smile on his face.
On a final note, Do watch the movie. It is definitely a feel-good movie for all the people who are in love and for those who are married to rekindle their love. And for those who arent in love as yet...wait for cupid to strike!
And for all of the above...appreciate the fact that love has come your way and most importantly stay in love!
