Saathiya-a perfect love story

Saathiya, a story of a married couple. Many people, especially girls, think that marriage is a fantasy world because you have a man at your side. If you want to know whether marriage is a fantasy, watch this movie. Saathiya stars Vivek Oberoi, Rani Mukherjee, and Shah Rukh Khan and Tabu are special appearances. Both Rani and Vivek do an excellent job at acting.

The movie came out in December 2002, and shorty after, around April 2003, Chalte Chalte came out. It was a total copy of Saathiya, and they were unsuccessful. The husband-wife problems in Chalte Chalte were pointless and unrealistic, while in Saathiya the problems actually happen. And anyway, a copy in such short time is too much.

The Story

The way the story starts is very appealing. Sometimes it would be the present, and sometimes the past. This method always kept you guessing.

In the beginning, they start with the past. Aditya (Vivek Oberoi) is riding on his motor cycle listening to a set of headphones. He is listening to the song ’O Humdum Suniyo Re’. While he is driving he spots an ambulance and the police tell him to take a detour, as an accident had just occured.

Then the scene switches to the present. It is the same day as when they’re showing the past, but later on in the evening. Aditya is calling around trying to find his wife Suhani (Rani Mukherjee). No one seems to know where she is and he is checking the train stations to see if she is there, but she is no where to be found. He’s calling her hospital but they say she already left.

Then the scene switches back to two years before. The song ’Chalka Chalke Re’ is playing. One of the girls in Suhani’s neighborhood is getting married. Dina (Suhani’s sister) and Suhani are dancing and singing. This is where Aditya and Suhani meet. He sees her and approaches her, but she plays the ’hard to get’ method. Aditya sees Suhani in the train and greets her, but she is still playing ’hard to get’. She also doesn’t want to get into a relationship because she is becoming a doctor, and she doesn’t want any distractions. So anyway, Dina repeatedly convinces Suhani that Aditya is a great guy and that she shouldn’t miss the chance. Finally, Suhani agrees to marry Aditya.

Their parents meet, but not all goes well. Aditya’s father is a sarcastic man with no manners. Suhani’s father says that if Aditya’s father doesn’t have any manners, what will Aditya have? Suhani backs off, but Aditya insists. He wants Suhani no matter what. Dina convinces Suhani to elope with Aditya, and they do. During their little wedding ceremony the song ’Mangalayam’ is playing. After they get married, they part their ways because Suhani obviously has to go home. They decide they won’t tell anyone yet, except obviously Dina knows. They live their married life alone, and the song ’Chupke Se’ comes along, while they make ’Indian love’.

A couple of days later some people come over to Suhani’s house and bring a marriage proposal for Dina. They are very nice people, and they have 2 sons. Both are present, and while asking for Dina’s hand, they ask if Suhani is single as well. Uh oh...she’s already married! Suhani’s mother takes her into the room to convince her to agree. Suhani changes her clothes and comes out with tears in her eyes. She says she’s sorry, but she’s already married to Aditya. The people leave, and Suhani’s parents are embarrassed. Suhani’s father kicks her out, and Aditya comes to take her away as his bride.

They rent a place, and it is actually quite nice. They live their life in harmony singing and dancing to ’Aye Udi Udi Udi’. But then, the fights start. The fights weren’t really big ones, in the beginning they were just playful. Like for example, Aditya asking where his files were, suspecting Suhani had thrown them away. They were fights that lasted two seconds.

One day, Suhani sees her mother and Dina in a train. They hug and Suhani’s mother shows her a doctors test, which was her fathers. Suhani is a doctor and sees that her father has Jaundice. She plans to go meet him, but first she asks Aditya. Aditya says that there wasn’t any point because he had kicked Suhani out. Suhani gets a little upset. When it was time to sleep, Aditya tells her that they will go meet her father. The next day they went to Suhani’s old house, but all she sees is disaster. Her father dies. Aditya and Suhani’s fights increase even more. Aditya has guilt for marrying Suhani, not because of their fights, but because Dina couldn’t get married to the guy who came to their house. He hooks them up, and his guilt goes away.

Suhani was walking to the train station from work when she meets up with Dina. Dina hasn’t told her yet that she has hooked up with the guy. He appears and Suhani shows happiness. Suhani finds out that Aditya hooked them up, and she runs home to go talk to him. She is about to cross the street, but she gets hit by a car. Guess who hits her? Savitri (Tabu). Now the story is in the present tense. Suhani is sent to the hospital, and Savitri’s husband is there. (Shah Rukh Khan) Without a relative, they can’t perform surgery, because Suhani was hit pretty bad. Shah Rukh Khan acts as Suhani’s husband and says her name is Savitri. Aditya visits each and every hospital, but he doesn’t find her. Shah Rukh Khan tells a police investigator to find out who she is, and if she’s married who her husband is. The police investigator finds out and goes to call Aditya.

Aditya goes to the hospital and meets with Suhani. She is in a coma. A little while later she has a seizure, and he meets with Shah Rukh Khan. He suspects that he was drinking, and says he will never forgive him if something happens to Suhani. Savitri approaches him, listening to all the crap Aditya gives Shah Rukh Khan, and tells him that it was her who hit Suhani. They tell Aditya that they are praying for him, and they leave. Aditya goes into the hospital room and tells Suhani to get up. By his powerful ’voice’ she gets up. They live a happy life after that.

My Opinion of the Story

The story was great. It was a little slow in the beginning, but it ended out very good. The cast was perfect for this movie plot, and everything about it was perfect. Saathiya shows the real life in marriage, unlike those movies who show how it is a fantasy. The way they switched from past to present to past was very thoughful, because it always made you guessing what was going on. Overall, this movie was enjoyable to watch.
