Sanjay Leela Bansali, the director of this movie known for his unique approach towards any story failed to impress the audience this time. This story is inspired by the book White Nights by Fyodor Dostoevskys. Saawarya was the most awaited movie of the year but sadly it proved to be a great disappointment among the masses.
Bansalis city is an imaginary one, the sets remind one of the background seen in the famous Aladdin cartoon series. The story beings with Gulaabji(Rani Mukerjee) who narrates the story of Ranbhir Raj(Ranbhir Kaboor), Gulaabji is a pr*stitute who tries to be cute but fails. She is impressed by this guy next door who comes to this imaginary city to sing in a bar.
Ranbhir Raj tries to be friends with the ladies in this imaginary city, sadly all are prostitues, he tries to bring a ray of hope but the audience is unimpressed.
One dark night he happens to see Sakina(Sonam Kapoor) who tries to avoid him and leaves the scene. The next day Sakina agrees to be his friend and narrates him her love story. Sakina is madly in love with Iman(Salman Khan) who was her one time tenant. He promised to return after a year and marry her. Sakina is waiting for him and asks Ranbhir to deliver a letter to him. Sakina from her sources happens to believe that Iman is in the next city. Ranbhir is madly in love with her and instead of delivering the letter burns it, Gulaabji notices this and doesnt approve of his act, convinces him to confess this to Sakina.
Ranbhir confesses his love to Sakina. He also convinces her to forget Iman and promises that he will help her lead a beautiful life. Sakina half heartedly agrees, though not convinced, moves on the silent street. As she glances on the bridge she notices Iman and is delighted, Ranbhir asked her to go with him for which she happily agrees.
This ends the narration of actress Rani Mukherjee. The story doesnt have much to offer and ends up on a sad note.
Bansali wouldnt have done a better job with such a weak script. The new star kids have done a fair job but with the script being weak, there is nothing much to look for. The movie offers n number of short songs, the only ones worth mentioning is the title tack and the songJab se tere naina.
