Vidhyasagar’s melodies always fascinates me always ..His melodies has a touch of MSV and Illayraaja ..
Off late his strategy is to have a MSV kind of melodies with harmony of Illayraaja and prelude , interlude like Ar rehman. But never does he copy their style, he maintains his own style. Since I am a fan of Karthik raaja, I heard this album as there was anews that he has sung for this album. Alas !! I did not find that !!!
1.vIZHIUM vIZHIUM - Madhu balakrishnan <HARINI
I was expecting a Kana Kanda kindof melody. This is not exactly carnatic as the kana kanden song. Starts with a typical rajathani kind of folk, something like in Laagan. It blends to a clean melody. This song can be compared to Garuda Garuda song by Deva in Nattamai. As I mentioned over the interludes have a clean AR Rehman kind of stamp, esp the flute piece , but again the melody has a clear stamp of Vidhyasagar. The charanam is clean , with less orchestration used. Very Nice melody !!!
2.ENgae ENgae -Karthik
Karthik and Vidhyasagar have given wonderful melodies in Varnajalam. I was expecting this ong to be yet another Pinju Mazhai song. Starts with an excellent sax piece, followed by a haunting melody sung by Karthik. Karthik has sung it very well. Only I feel , karthik could have sung this song with a bit more emotions. The mood reflects the song ’ Poveku kellam ’ from Uyirodu Uyiraaga. The first interlude has the illayraaja touch and teh charanam has definetly the MSV kind of melody ..Definitely ...the later part of charanam will definetly remind the pinju mazhai chaaral song ...The second interlude has an excellent jazz sax , followed by an Rehmanish kind of orchestral piece...Again a very nice melody !!
3.Ambuli mama - KK , Sujatha
This song is defintely a thrushti after hearing the above 2 melodic songs ..Follows into the genre of the ’Kaadhal Pisase’ with some techno loop beats ..I think the producers would have wanted an song like that ..Interludes have a carribean /Spanish kind of music ....Ok song, if u hear after the 2 melodies ..but its actually good ...
4.Ennai thanutuven -Karthik , Srilekha
A very typical starts with a Illayraaja kind of prelude..A typical 80 -90s kind of Illayaaja kind of song. Nice melody ...The interludes have a the usage of modern instruments ..SO I would say Vidhyasagar has tried an Illayraaja tune with a different kind of orchestration in interludes ...Again a nice melody ...Karthik has sung very well, but the female choice should have been chitra or sadhana sargam ...
5.Advome Palli ( bharathiyaar song ) -Manickka Vinayagam
I did have some expectations after hearing the fact vidhyasagar is tune bharathiyaar song. This does not disappoint ...Probably SPB could have sung the song ..Sounds like a bit old song, but neverthless the tune is really good ...Thanks a lot of Vidhyasagar for not making like a ’sutrum sudar ’ from KKKK. He has retained the spirit and sernity of the song ..
6.Ennene Pidikum -SUnitha Sarathy
A typical Yuvan Shankar Raaj kind of Techno song , with strange sounds with no proper scales or any form in teh song ...Can be compared to Kaatru enbatha song from Perazhagan ..Only this has more tune into it ...the first interlude has an excellent KRish kind of solo violin ...Ok song ....Might remind thuthu varuma song as sunitha has sung ...Will grow after 1-2 hearings ...
It is refreshing to see 3-4 melodies in a movie, when apadi podu , maachan peru songs are becoming a hit ..Though these songs have stamp of other music directors, this album neverthless will grow on repeated hearings ..As a fan of melody I would recommend this album ..
