Sanjay Leela Bhansali
The director is just few films old, but has occupied an important place in Indian Cinema. After the stupendous commercial success of ‘Hum dil de chuke sanam’ and ‘Devdas’, the director took audiences by storm with his amazing portrayal of darkness zone in Black. The director feels even madness can be romanticized. A person, who believes that anger leads to perfection, breaks mobile phones on sets if a shot goes badly or someone makes silly mistakes and he also weeps at a time.
For him, making films is like ‘yajna’ (worship). Discussed here are some of basic characteristics of this Mummy’s Boy who says that he would be proud if people drop the Sanjay bit and simply call him Leela.
Black
It is difficult to believe how, a director who is passionate about songs and dance, could make a film like Black with not even background songs. It was a bold decision indeed that resulted in a world-class film by an Indian Director. The background songs could have distracted attention. One could notice touches of Guru Dutt in Black – this young director is influenced by great minds. The ambience chosen in Black was that of Anglo-Indian, something unusual for Hindi Cinema. He likes creating a particular ambience in his films like Bengali ambience in Devdas and Gujarati in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam………….
Devdas
It was another bold decision to make Devdas as two classic versions had already been made. That was a challenge!!! Devdas landed in unnecessary controversies like the deviation from the orginal text, the huge amount being spent, etc. How many of them in the film industry would dare to make a film which would cost Rs.50 crore??? Making a state-of –the-art film demands expense. And money is never lost on a good film. Devdas brings out his passion for music who likes everything except rock. It would not be surprising to see a full-fledged musical from him in future.
Forthcoming Films
Bajirao Mastani – a film, which is on, hold right now due to some casting problems. Hope it gets resolved soon and we get to see another good film from Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
