During my visit to Leh(LADAKH), I did spend a night in a hotel in Sarchu. The hotel was more of a tent house covered by a thin plastic sheet which was waving due to the strong wind outside. Sarchu is not easily accessible to the common public as it requires more than 10 hours of journey from Manali. The whole way has to be covered on road until unless you have a private helicopter. Sarchu is often found to be in an area of sand dunes and you would not find anything of extraordinary beauty. But if youve been to the San Francisco this area might prove to be similar. There are lots of mountains but barely covered with snow.
Sarchu doesnt have any local sightseeing only have mountains and small shops which are located near the roads. These hotels\accommodations provide you with food, fuel for bikes and lodging. However, If you are interested in hiking well this place might not be one your interests. Sarchu has a great special dish which is often made by the localites also known as "THOKPA". This dish is more like stew and is not that spicy in taste however it provides you with enough nutrition to carry out the well being of your day.
one important thing Id like to mention is always carry water bottle when you are travelling in these hilly areas because they are all covered with dust and sand and would take away the moisture so you need to drink water at regular intervals.
for Safety they have checkposts at merely 10 kms so need to worry.
The most intriguing Local sightseeing is the Sarchu Pass which is 4290 m above the sea level and upon which youd find snow. With that being said, I know we indians are so much fond of snow, so do visit.
