Every time you feel down..or is bitten by the blues bug..go get a copy of SARFAROSH..and view it with or without co-viewers..this flick will have the effects on you..guaranteed.
I firmly believe when a creative person (and a good one )..be it an artist, painter, writer, composer or for that matter a movie maker makes his debut, he puts in what can be termed as his/her Labour of Love. John Matthew Mathan has done just that and has produced and directed a splendid movie which will be remembered for years to come by every movie lover. I sincerely wonder if ever he can bring out another one as good as this.
The Plot
Aamir Khan is a normal student who is a victim of circumstances when his elder brother gets bumped off by goons who are into gun running from across the border and are traitors of the state. His father gets paralyzed from the shock and the entire family moves to Mumbai and set up their business.
Aamir goes on to join the police force and his portrayal as the young earnest ACP Rathod is one of remarkable sincerity. The way he handles his job and goes about the business of catching antisocial elements in Mumbai along with his team is a lesson in professionalism as far as characterization in acting is concerned.
In his quest to unearth the dirty nexus between politicians, local goons and drug and gun smugglers from across the border he comes across a reputed and established Ghazal singer (played by Nassiruddin Shah) whom he had befriended besides being an unabashed fan.
At the end he succeeds in ending the existing network of bad men in a dramatic setup wherein he cleverly manages to set them up against each other and thus the movie goes on for the proverbial happy ending.
The Strong Points
Aamir Khan as the dynamic young ACP does complete justice to the character and goes on to show why he is rated as among the finest actors of his generation..no hamming. no over exaggerating..he is cool and composed…an overall excellent performance.
The editing of the movie is a demonstration of what good work is all about. Not a single moment of the movie seems out of context or stretched unnecessarily. It’s a lesson for all neo-film makers.
The music is pleasing, catchy and most importantly the songs are wells placed, well spaced and are definitely non-irritants.
Choice of the actors for the others characters is very good and they have been handled rather excellently. Even Sonali Bendre ( an otherwise pretty and desirably beautiful lady but acting skills!! I leave it to you..) does not seem out of place. But the scene-stealer is Mukesh Rishi as Aamir’s subordinate, who is a muslim Inspector and handles his anger for the prejudices against him with much aplomb and delivers a splendid performance.
Last but not the least is the script and the direction for which the director and the writer take all the credit.
Overall, a movie which grips the viewer with its strong shades of patriotism, action sequences, acting skills, a tightly knit script and superb direction. One only wishes that John M M carries on the good work and provides us with such wholesome entertainers, the kind of which is scarcely made in bollywood.
