Cricket is now a game of the mind. Its not all about batting, bowling and fielding, but decision making is another important factor of the game. In doing it, Saurav Ganguly had been the master and the commander. His position in the team arises no question as he is the most successful captain of India.
He had given some innovative ideas like opening the batting with Parthiv Patel in the previous test series against Pakistan which proved to be great. He is the Indian captain with most overseas victories as well as total victories. He had been an asset to the Indian team.
He is an inspiration to all members of the team especially the youngsters. He supports them very much. He has made India a powerful side in the Cricket map. His aggression and alertness in the ground has brought him success as a captain as well as a player.
He had given a lots of contributions as a player in the team. He gave the Indian team the first victory against Sri Lanka in World Cups getting his highest score of 183 and a partnership of 318 with Rahul Dravid. He scored the maximum number of sixes in a World Cup match in the same game.
He has been given the names The Lord Of The Off Side, Bengal Tiger and the Prince Of Kolkata. He is a master of off side shots and plays lofted shots over the mid-on and mid-off very well.
He is an excellent player of spin bowling and the ball goes over the boundary at a lots of occassions. He only plays limited shots on the off side, but still he times them to perfection.
His debut century against England at Lords and his 124 against Pakistan at Dhaka in the final of the Independence cup where quite amazing. His 5/16 against Pakistan was some extra ordinary display of bowling.
He averages above fourty in One Days as well as in tests. He has scored over 9000 in One Days and over 4000 in tests. 22 centuries and 53 fifties in One Days shows his class and quality. His movement of the bat and footwork are great and it increases the beauty of his shots.
He had been having some problems against bouncers, but he still manages to pull them for sixes. He was accused of not having control over emotions, but he has the desire to achieve a goal and works hard for it. His records show it. I hope that he will be in the team for the next two World Cups.
UPDATE:-Saurav is the only player to get four consecutive man of the match awards, thanks to the Sahara Cup in Toronto. He is also the fastest player to get 7000, 8000 and 9000 runs in One Day cricket- thats quite an achievement.
