Scent of Life

The first thing that comes to mind after you’ve seen this film is why is it called what it is called? It could be rather aptly titled Scent of Life. Cause that is the message that the film gives.

There is a dialogue in the film – Tango is not like life. It is simple. If you get tangled, just tango on. Al Pacino who plays the protagonist of the film says it to his protégée Chris ODonell. But in fact tango is just like life. If you get tangled you just live on and work towards better times. And that is exactly what happens in this film as well.

Al Pacino plays a retired army Lieutenant. He loses his eyesight in an accident for which he is responsible himself. And being an upright man all his life, he finds it rather difficult to face life – not on his terms.

He plans a weekend filled with enjoyment after which he decides to take him life. Or in his words, blow his brains out.

Since he is blind and needs assistance, his niece hires a college kid. While this boy thinks that he is supposed to take care of the Colonel at home, he is in a rude shock when he is flown to New York – first class.

The interaction between these two characters – one who has almost lived his life and done things he had to and one who is just about going to start his life – is narrated wonderfully.

Al Pacino flies to New York first class, puts up in a five star hotel, dines at expensive restaurants, tangoes with a beautiful woman, has sex with another pretty lady and is all set to kill himself.

Chris ODonell feels morally obligated to not let him do so. And tries to stop him. Reminds him of his other passion – racing a ferrari and takes him to do just that.

An unusual story about how two people living almost in different time zones help each other out and in a way enrich each other’s lives is what Scent of A Woman is all about.

Al Pacino in the role of a blind officer delivers a fantastic performance. And Chris ODonell matches him an eye for an eye.
