A Fortunate Accident

That, my dear readers, is the meaning of Serendipity (hey! I spelt it correctly!)Its a romantic movie from the first frame to the last.

A chance encounter and a minor scuffle at a Bloomingdales department store, over a pair of black gloves, brings two likely soul mates, Johnathon Trayder (John Cusack) and Sara Thomas (Kate Beckinsale) together. Two total strangers who begin to revel in each others company.

Their encounter takes them to a cafe named ’’Serendipity’’ where they discuss Fate and chance. Kate is a romantic and believes that they were meant to meet and so they did. Johnathon, on the other hand, is a wee bit skeptical but is willing to accept anything to get the name and the telephone number of this gorgeous English girl. She refuses to give her name and claims that if they were meant to meet, then they will.

Thus, she disappears into the night in a yellow cab. The despairing Johnathon discovers that his neck-warmer is missing and goes back to the cafe. Lo and behold! he meets the lovely Ms. Sara who still refuses to tell him her name.

They spend a lovely evening on the skating rink. As the night draws to a close, she insists that if they are to meet again, then they will. Saying so, she gets his name and telephone number on a 5 dollar bill and gives it to the nearest shopkeeper(she insists that if they were meant to meet, then that 5 dollar bill will be in her hands one day). To counter that, she writes her name and telephone number on a novel (Love in the time of Cholera) and claims that she will sell the book and if he were meant to find it, he will. They part ways with one glove each.

A few years later Johnathon is about to be married to another woman. Although hes happy, he cannot stop thinking of Sara. He enlists the aid of his best friend to track her down and find her. Three days to go to his wedding and hes getting no where in his search.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, Sara is a counsellor and trying to convince her patient that there is no such thing as Fate. Her boy friend proposes to her and they are to be married in a weeks time. She takes off to New York with her best friend to find the man who has been on her mind for years.

The movie is a series of close shaves and encounters. Somewhere during the search, the 5 dollar bill gets into the hands of her best friend. By chance, the novel with Saras name and telephone number on it falls into his hands the night before his wedding.

Each of them are so close to each other and yet so far away. While shes getting into a cab, hes getting out of one. While shes getting out of the hotel, hes getting into it. Naturally, eventually, they find each other and live happily ever after.

It only goes to show that one cannot push Fate. When something is meant to happen, it will happen.

The movie has a couple of good laughs and the characters play their roles perfectly. I was quite taken up with the movie. No, it didn’t make me all romantic but it kinda makes you feel all warm on the inside. I was not impressed with all the chances and the way things just happen to take place. The only thing I learnt from this movie is ’’Never give up’’
