Not so superb CBI

Dear readers,

Detective and suspense movies , especially those coming out in a series are not so common in Malayalam compared with the well accepted buffoon movies. I am an anxious viewer of such detective movies. The much awaited ’Sethuraamayyar CBI’ completely disappointed me. The makers of the movie claimed that it was the best of the CBI series. But I have the opinion that the 3rd did not keep the standard of its predecessors.

The film simply highlights the Sethuramaiyer (as done in Mohanlal movies), which is very clear from the title ?Sethuramaiyer CBI? and the wrong scene introducing Mammootthy. The background score by Shyam is given a ’rock effect’ which seems to be a remix of the original track (as needed by today?s viewers).

In the first and second parts of CBI , we watched a murder and the related investigation by CBI in a realistic way.We feel as if the whole thing taking place in our neighborhood.

The casting was excellent and the investigation had been logical. One appreciable thing about the films was that the family affairs of the investigating CBI officer are avoided except in one or two scenes , which is in the form of telephone communications.

But in the latest CBI, the murder has been pictured cold blooded, but the reason for it is ridiculus. Iyer?s sister family consisting of 2 ’brilliant girls’, helpful to Iyer doesn’t fit for the film. Instead if it were Mr.Iyer’s own family with his wife and son (indications in 1st and 2nd parts), who also help him in investigations, it would have been a differnet experience for the viewer.

To complete a 3 men army, a new character is brought to scene. The CBI trainee palyed by Vineet kumar is needless such as the above girl characters. Scenes like the stone shower on the house (made full of glasses !!) , meeting of Iyer with the servant of Ouseppachan’s home , played by Adur Bhavani (it is evident that she is in sick bed) , would have been avoided .The character of Ousepachan is also very boaring since he didn?t have anything to do than to simply afraid of CBI.

Mr.Iyer’s major rival in the previous parts was the police officer Devadaas , a role which Sukumaran made shining as Mamootty did with Iyer. The only freshness of the CBI-3 is the role played by Saykumar. It reveals the range of that actor. No one can feel the absence of Devadaas (Sukumaaran) as Saykumar appeared as his son and of the same wicked characteristics and slang. Only Saykumar is the freshness of the film overriding the story and hero Mamootty, and he deserves full appreciation.

It is to conclude that lack of technical compilation, repetition of characters, irrevalent characters etc make the film an ordinary detective movie, which I rate a few steps below ?Sasneham Sumitra? , directed by a newcomer(hard to believe), which was also a suspense movie , failed because of the mouth publicity of CBI movie and bad time of Suresh Gopi.
