Andy Dufresne-the hero of the Shawshank redemption-a young banker wrongfully sentenced to for the murders of his unfaithful wife and her lover. He plans his escape from prison-the pieces of his strategy are developed over painfully long years. His tool of revolt is a small chisel which is used to dig a whole tunnel. The perseverance of this character, his sheer intelligence and his sensitiveness to others’ hardships leaves one with an overwhelming feeling of pride. I am extremely proud of this physically weak intellectually strong man.
The story seen through the eyes of Red takes the viewer through the untold realities of prison life-the ennui, the dullness; it also brings out the effect an individual can produce on a whole community despite setbacks, despite the strong feeling of personal injustice. The corruption within reform institutions-the appalling unfairness of authorities-these issues have been addressed with no overdone sentimentality. No wonder then, that at the end of the movie, you are left with a deep sense of gratification more than anything else.
And if you are emotional like me, an overwhelming feeling of pride.
