AN EPIC...with the flames still burning!!!..

An epic..A movie which is still green in memory. Dialouges which even kids of this generation deliver …A movie which every Indian might have seen atleast Once..No points for guessing…ITS “ShOlaY”……

I wanted to write a review on this movie atleast 5-6 months back but somehow was not able to manage. .I really wanted to give justice to this review, , , I hope I give it this time..

This is my 10 th review and it’s a review after a long time of no reviews..So in a way its my comeback review..lets not get into that ..BACK TO TOPIC..

Sholay released way back in 1975..so it has nearly completed 3 decades. I have seen many reviews written on it on MS. So to be still green in memory speaks in volumes about the movie.

Star cast of the movie includes THE BIG B of Bollywood Mr. Amitabh Bachhan as JAY..though he wasn’t a big B then but yes this movie turned his fortunes.

Other significant casts are Dharmendra as Viru, Sanjeev Kumar as Thakur, Hema Malini as Basanti, Jaya Bhaduri(now Bachhan) as Radha, Asrani as Jailer, Amjad Khan as Gabbar Singh, A.K .Hangal as Imam Chacha, Satyan Kappu as Ram lal, Jagdeep as Surma Bhopali, Leela Misra as Mausi, Keshto Mukherjee as Hariram Nai, Iftekar as Narmadaji, Sachin as Ahmed, Viju Khote as Kalia, Mac Mohan As Samba and many more..

Sholay is a film which had everything which a Bollywood movie wanted..It had Action, Commedy, Romance, Songs, Emotion, Drama, Dialogues...JUST a perfect Bollywood movie. To my MS friends not from India..This is a Movie for ull to watch for.

I wish I cud get some publicity incentives for that..

Sholay is a story of two crooks who are best friends or vice versa. They indulge in petty malpractices to earn their living. The most important thing for them in deciding to do anything important is a COIN which Amitabh(Jay) tosses everytime they have to decide on something. This coin surprisingly works in favour of Jay, as he always wins it. Thus its his decision which matters everytime.

Thakur a Police Inspector in his earlier days decides to hire Jay and Veeru to capture Gabbar Singh the Dacoit of RamGad, the village where Thakur resides.

Jay tosses his coin and they both decide to visit Ramgad.

Here Basanti a Tangawali meets both Jay and Veeru.. Her non stop conversation I guess was a real trend setter for Indian women..which they haven’t given up yet…Mumbai Railways ladies compartment is a live example for that..Veeru falls for her after 2-3 meets. Jay develops a soft corner for Radha, a widow. Radha is Thakurs Daughter in law.

Thakur had earlier caught Gabbar singh and put him in Jail, from where Gabbar runs away, typical Indian Jail. Gabbar takes revenge and kills Thakurs entire family. In a rage Thakur hunts out for Gabbar but falls in Gabbars trap who cuts off Thakurs both hands.

The dialogue Of Gabbar is still heard in college campus “ BAhut Jaan hai re in haathon main..Yeh haath Mujhe Dede Thakur”( These hands are full of life..Give me this hands Thakur) though in college its used for a flirting proposal to a female..

Thakur helpless without hands, decides to take revenge with the help of Jay and Veeru. Thakur agrees to give them money and the award which the government had kept on catching Gabbar singh but asks them to hand over Gabbar to him alive.

Jay and Veeru protect the villagers from the usual extortion of Gabbar and sends his men who come to forcibly collect Grains and other stuffs from villagers empty handed.

The dialogue from Gabbar which follows after it, is his introductory scene in the movie. Its a fabulous scene from the movie. Which has been a hit and will remain so for long long years to come. Its too difficult to produce it verbatim. It has to be seen to experience the work which an actor has done in his first movie.

The greatness of the movie is that each and every dialogue of the movie is a hit, even though it may be as small as the A.K. Hangal’s ( Imam Chacha’s) dialogue..

“Itna Sannata Kyun hai Bhai”(Why is there so much Silence) When his son Ahmed (Sachin) is killed by Gabbar and is sent back on horse back to the village with a letter asking Thakur to surrender Jay and Veeru to Gabbar.

There are a few hilarious moments with Jay, Veeru, Basanti, Jailer, Surma Bhopali, & Basanti’s Mausi(Aunty) in between. The one which I love to watch is when Jay goes to ask Basanti’s mausi for her acceptance to the proposal of Veeru for Basanti. I still cant stop laughing when I see that scene.

Second in my list comes the Veeru Scene on a Water tank to commit suicide since Mausi rejects the proposal. The Dialogue which Veeru delivered in Hinglish and Some terrible English was a superhit. “When I dead, Police coming, Police coming, Budia going Jail, In Jail, Budia Chakki Pising and Pising and Pising.”

Asrani’s(Jailer’s) “Hum Angrezo ke zamane ke Jailor Hai”(I m a Jailer of the period when the English ruled India), Surma Bhopalis “Humara naam bhi Surma Bhopali aise hi nahin hai”( My name is Surma Bhopali not by fluke), Basanti’s “Yuke”, Jay’s “Tumhara Naam kya hai Basanti”(Whats Ur name Basanti”), Gabbar’s “Arre O Samba Kitne AAdmi The”(Hey Samba How many persons were there), Gabbar’s “Ab Tera Kya Hoga Kalia’’ (Now whats ur fate Kalia ) is still heard in the bylanes where kids play pranks..or while sharing a lighter moment., In college Campus, Canteens, Get togethers etc.

Songs of the movie were not much a hit barring ’’Mehbooba Mehbooba” which featured Jalal Aga. Yeh Dosti picturised on Jay and Veeru was fun to watch.

The climax of the scene brings tears. A wonderful work done by Amitabh Bachhan.

One thing to watch for in the Climax is the Shoes of Thakur and his fight with Gabbar Singh. These shoes contain nails which he uses to hit Gabbar. The dialogue is repeated but the person changes here “Gabbar YEh haath Mujhe dede”, Thakur charges with his shoes on Gabbar’s hands.

Its also the time to reveal the suspense of tosses always won by Jay.

I m not discussing the climax here for those who haven’t seen the movie.

Then comes the Police at the end as usual in Bollywood movies.

ShoLay has again Hit the theatres in Mumbai here. I Better don’t miss this Golden opportunity. Looking forward to See it this weekend. What r u waiting for!!!!!!
