Its a great mistake done by the seletors by selecting ganguly for the Pakistan series.
The reasons he should not be selected are:
If you consider the batting records of Sourav Ganguly over past couple of years, it is evident that he has scored centuries and even most of his fifties only against weak teams like Zimbabwe and Bangladesh.This clearly shows that he is over his peak .
Only reason he was in the team was that India were winning
The only reason he was in the team was that India were winning and he was the captain of the Indian team.But since the Pakistan tour last year, India won virtually nothing. As a result he has to be removed since he deserves no merit solely as a player.
Making 30’s against a weak bowling attack is no big deal
An argument raised by many of Ganguly’s supporters is that he did not perform badly against the Sri Lankan attack and hence should not be removed. But I will ask what is the big deal in making 30’s against a weak Sri Lankan attack who are too heavily dependent upon Muralidharan and against whom even batsmans(or bowlers) like harbhajan, Agarkar and Kumble scored very well and in fact more than Ganguly.
Prevents youngsters from getting oppurtunities
Another problem with taking an ageing player like ganguly is that it prevents promising youngsters like Mohd. Kaif from getting oppurtunities by which India may lose a valuable talent.
He cannot be retained for life just because he took India to World Cup Finals
Agreed, Ganguly has taken India to the World Cup Final. But he cannot be retained in the team for lifelong just because of that. If you go by that logic Kapil Dev should be playing even today.Yes, all Indians are proud that Ganguly took India to the World Cup final, but there comes a time when everyone has to go and the time has well and truly come for Dada.
