An erotic tale of lust and passion

In the beginning of writing this review, I was thinking about the title as “a passionate porn story” but then I thought some people may not apprehend with this so I changed it. Anyway this film has quite a different theme “the story of a priest who is so obsessed with a village belle that he crosses all limits in order to achieve complete possessiveness over her”. Now let’s check the story first.

The film begins in a courtroom where the judge orders death penalty to the convict father William (Shiney Ahuja). Obviously here begins the flashback and our story starts.

Father William is a priest in a coastal village in kerala.. One day    accidentally, he come across a local girl, Rosemary (Seema Rehmani) , who aspires to become a nurse. William recommend her to a famous hospital and it appears to be a normal gesture for a priest. But the story is no that simple, William actually gets attracted to Rosemary , both physically and mentally. Initially he promises her that he will seek the help of his seniors and subsequently marry her. However one day he confesses to her that he can’t jeopardize his career for her, as he is going to be promoted and then he find an alternate method for their relationship to continue. He finds a husband (Nitesh Pandey) for rosemary on the very condition that he won’t even meet(forget touch !) her without his permission.

By this time rosemary is completely broken, but god has someone to share her solitude and guess it’s whom? It’s none other than her very own husband. He helps her to elope from there and they both go to Mumbai and start a new life. After sometime William got to know that rosemary is pregnant. He looses all his control and kills rose’s mother. Finally when rose try to revolt against him by deciding to lodge a police complain he got her murdered too!. In the end he is sentenced to death for all his horrible deeds.

The film starts off very well suggesting a very passionate love between the protagonists , but very soon this love turns into a mere play of bedroom techniques. Also the relationship between rose and her husband is also somewhat less illustrated , ie. How does suddenly graham starts caring about his wife and his self-respect ?

The first half will keep u engaged, but film looses its charm in the post interval portions. One can definitely agree the relevance of exposure in this sort of film, but here it’s quite much more than required. In the pre-interval portions after every 10-12 minutes one such scene is there and also the scenes are rather too graphic instead of being suggestive. Thanks to the background score which tries it’s best to transform such scenes into somewhat aesthetic (but then one can’t think that every time considering their number of appearances!)

performances:

Shiney Ahuja shines once again after “Hazaron Kwaishein Aisi”. The character of William undergoes numeral shades during the film from a caring lover, to a sadistic priest caught between desires and duty, to a semi-psychotic stalker, who wrecks havoc when lost his object of lust and Shiney portrays them with equal ease. It’s nice to see a modeling dude to gel with such realistic roles so often. Seema Rahmani does full justice to the role of     Rosemary, though she is far behind the works of Chitrangada Singh(the latest sensation in HKA), but she has this earthy grief in her face, which shows signs of sparkles. Throwing clothes as well as emotions, both comes easily to her. Watch out for her in the coming future! Supporting cast include Nitesh Pandey , Uttara Raokar (Rose’s mother) and a bunch of small time actors , among them only the two names I mentioned , provides descent performances. Oh yes! one thing more, though the film is supposed to be based in kerala, it was really amusing that almost half of the actors (especially the driver of priest) were totally clueless , how to get a proper south indian accent. This was one point, where the director must have taken care of.

The director Vinod Pandey has a history of making sensitive films like “ek baar phir” and “yeh nazdikiyaan” . this time also he takes us into a journey of lust and obsession and shows us various faces of human behaviour. Luckily he too entrapped into a controversy because of “depicting a priest in almost a half-monster”. But unfortunately the film couldn’t   capitalized on the debate and felt flat on box-office. Then also, it’s not a bad idea to share your weekend with (on either vcd or dvd) this one!

Anyway don’t forget to add your valuable comments.
