We’d been planning to watch Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow for quite a while now, and we finally got our chance this weekend. Sky Captain is shot as a very futuristic looking world of the early thirties. The movie is dominated by some spectacular special effects, a somewhat respectable storyline, but rather pitiable performances by the rather corny protagonists – Jude Law who plays lead, and Gwyneth Paltrow.
All hell breaks loose when an army of robots attach downtown Manhattan. This along with the mysterious disappearance of the world’s top scientists leads Sky Captain (Law) and his reporter girlfriend (Paltrow) to Nepal in search of the evil Dr. Totrnkopf. Enroute they engage in battle with flying mechanical birds, spider bots, and female droids. Adding to the mayhem is a one eyed Angelina Jolie who plays Sky Captain’s old flame. Needless to say more battles follow – in the air, on the ground and underwater, as the trio along with Jolie’s amphibious squadron head towards the island of the naughty doctor.
All said and done, Sky Captain is not that bad a film. Its almost like the Incredibles and Flash Gordon set off to meet The Wizard of Oz, but end up fighting Johnny Sokko and His Giant Robot in Jurassic Park. I just wished I had stayed awake through it.
