Overpriced. Under-Performer.

I bought the Sony Ericsson W995 at 25000 INR.

Design:

I loved the design. It’s STYLISH. The brushed metal looks fabulous, especially on the silver model.

The 2.6 inches 320x240 display is smooth.  The phone has a round D-pad. Keypad  should have been more tactile. But not bad. It’s got a Walkman player shortcut key on the left side which is very annoying because it gets pressed every now n then. On the left-hand side is also the Fast Port connector. The phone has an 8GB M2 card. The right side of the device has got the camera button, the volume rocker and the dedicated music controls. The volume keys are too small and uncomfortable but the player controls are good. There is the 3.5mm audio-jack on the top. I was expecting TV-OUT too but it’s not there. It has  DLNA instead. The dedicated Walkman player controls glow when the Walkman

player is on. a very pleasant orange color. The keypad is lit with white color. All in all very cool lighting. The phone has a decent video-call camera on the front. It also has the ambient light sensor which enables better legibility especially in sunlight. At the backside, there is the kick-stand, 8.1mp camera and Power-LED flash. The kickstand is great for hands-free video viewing. There is no lens cover. The sonyericsson, 8.1 mp and M2 stickers came off in 2 weeks. really sad.

User interface, Platform, Messeging etc.:

The platfform is JAVA MIDP 2.0. JP-8.4.4. To be honest it’s a major letdown considering the popularity of the other platforms like Symbian, WinMo or even Android. There is not much that can be done with the Java phones. After a period of time it becomes boring. No Office document viewers, no PDF viewers. I believe there is a wide range of software’s meant to run on the other mentioned platforms above as opposed to the too simple JAVA platform.

The user-interface is fast. The FLASH-THEMES are awesome. The animations are cool. The SHAKE-THEMES are pretty cool. The motion sensor supports certain apps only.

The Media Gallery which is based on FLASH automatically adjusts to horizontal or vertical. The MEDIA Gallery is nicely designed. It has 1] Photo  2] MUSIC 3] Video 4]Games 5] Web feeds all in one place. But the videos section is way too slow and sluggish. It SUCKS. The Photo’s section isn’t as pleasing either. No search option.  Zooming of photo’s is smooth n impressive. THE SLIDE-SHOW  option is fun to use with 5 transition effects and cool background music. But you can’t select which photo’s to Slide-Show. How PATHETIC! Music section is good. Sony-Ericsson forgot to provide a SEARCH option within the play-list! A 8GB card full of songs.U can imagine how inconvenient it becomes when the SEARCH option is absent. Multitasking is available between JAVA apps. But the web-browser doesn’t

minimize! So don’t expect to multitask with the WEB-Browser running. What a shame!

The FILE-MANAGER is decent and does all the basic operations of "mark-cut-copy-paste".But it doesn’t minimize either nor does it have a SEARCH option.

The MESSAGING feature is great. Very simple and easy to use. Has all the features you’ll need. The CONVERSATIONS feature is a very good alternative to the traditional way of messaging. It’s as cool as chatting.
Audio quality:

Sony Ericsson W995 is certainly one of the best  in terms of audio quality. Though it could have been LOUDER. The earphone quality is decent, though it could have been better. The portable speaker that

is a part of the bundle is awesome. The quality is superb. No charging required for these.

Video quality:

W995 supports 3gp and mp4 only. No DIVX/XVID support. Almost every file has to be converted to the given 320x240 resolution. It’s boring. Video Quality is good. The video player on the Sony Ericsson W995 supports fast-forward, rewind, and slow-motion playback. It can play in landscape.A nice feature of the video player is the screenshot capability.

The MEDIA-GO software provided by the company does the converting automatically. I feel that the software is merely a Convert and Synchronize tool, nothing impressive really.

THE CAMERA:

the 8 MP AF camera on the W995 offers a wide range of features like face detection, camera images geotagging, exposure metering, image and video stabilizer, BestPic, auto-rotation, macro mode, etc. But it’s all over the MENU, not classified properly. no shortcuts.

The W995 is capable of a maximum image resolution of 3264 x 2448 pixels with an average file size of about 2 MB. There is a PowerLED flash to assist in short-range shooting. There is NO NIGHT-MODE for Still-Photography.The camera is only impressive for close shots and only when the environment is well lit. In low-light conditions the camera gives up. Video Recording is just about OK.

Connectivity

WIFI is gr8. 3G, Bluetooth[A2dp] is there too.

games n apps r good. it has youtube.

Conclusion: I think, buying a pricey JAVA phone is a senseless decision. There r better phones in the market. Trust me, Don’t waste money on w995. I’ve made a mistake.
