I live in bangalore and bought my playstation 2 on october 2004 from the grey market for Rs 9, 700 (50004 model i.e. silver one).I got it for this price since I knew the shop keeper through my uncle’s friend’s friend so convinced him, otherwise the price would be about 10, 200. Anyway I bought a bunch of games(not mentioning which kind) including gta san andreas and a memory card(for 900) which are used for saving games and an additional controller. this controller I found out had non functional analog sticks(a pair of joysticks at the bottom) also the controller had a shortened cord so this was obviously a duplicate make(controllers cost around 400). I had used an old pc for quite a time so the graphics were the first thing that caught my eye and ofcourse the constant high framerate however the xbox has bettter graphics.dvd playback quality it not bad at all however a dvd remote for a ps2 costs about 1, 400 so using your controller would be a better option.If your games have trouble working it’s hard to fix them since u can’t update their versions, prince of persia warrior within gave a lot of problems so I had to buy another copy cause this one is my favourite.some games just get stuck in the middle which is very irritating .The machine is quite sturdy so won’t get damaged easily and this one’s a sony so u can expect good durability but many ps2’s have disc read error’s mine had one too on 21 may 2005.I searched the internet for any fixes and found a few and repaired it myself(a kid could have done it cause of the simple procedure), though the ps2 is officiallly launched in india their parts are ’’rarely available here’’ a sony authorised repair centre told me.The games that are launched on the ps2 are very good so no complaints on the quality of games definetly better than the games on the pc but today’s fast computers(p4 3ghs geforce fx 5900) easily overtakes the ps2 in terms of graphics and also the xbox but the xbox has lesser technical support here and also the non availability of games is also an issue.All the other technical information on the ps2 can be found on any sony site so I won’t waste time on it.The ps2 has been around for five years now and nex-gen consoles are just around the corner like the xbox360 and ps3 but it will be a long time before they arrive here and also they will be very expensive. Remember to buy the new slim ps2(costs 11, 0000) it’s really hot otherwise the 50004 model i.e.satin silver don’t buy the any other older versions since they have problems.For more info on games visit https://gamespot.com and also read a review before buying one.Memory cards can save games for about 15 games you’ll have to delete old files if it is filled to save any more.You can install a specially designed hard drive for a ps2 but not required for most gamers.Eye toy(costs 2, 400) is another additional accesory which is a digital camera attached to your ps2 it detects motion and hence specially designed games can be played using your body movements it really takes gaming to a whole new level . Original ps2 titles cost about 2, 400.I heard that multiplayer support is a pain in the a** for the ps2 so that’s a drawback.Also ps2 suppots dolby digital sound and also from my own experience the sound is just great. If you can afford a fast pc or you want to wait for ps3, ps2 is not for you, but if you want to play games at present the latest games and want a dvd player, the ps2 is for you!
