Sorry Bhai! is a very unusual complicated, love triangle between two brothers and a woman, who falls in love with the younger brother of a man with whom, she on threshold to get married. No one would like that to happen but it can happen to anyone, a bold subject.
After the Eid Celebrations, I needed a Break from hetic activities, that night I just flip the collection of New DVDs that came on Sunday, Aaahh found Chitrangada Singh on cover with Sanjay Suri and Sharman Joshi. After watching, My Brother Nikhil & Bas Ek Pal, of the Onir & Sanjay Suri, I said Why Not "Sorry Bhai".
The biggest reason I made the choice was Chitrangada Singh(Hazaron Khwaishein Aisi), she come closest to late Smitha Patil, to me. Thus I got a chance to seeSorry Bhai! yesterday. I watched the film and loved it for reasons other than Chitrangada Singh. The film is special as it marks the comeback of Chitrangada Singh, who is gorgeous(lol) lady who had made waves when she entered Bollywood in 2003 with immense critical appreciation in Sudhir Mishras Hazaron Khwaishein Aisi. Later, she announced a retirement from films after doing Kal - Yesterday and Tomorrow. She took a long break from Bollywood after her marriage with golfer Jyoti Randhawa in 2005.
Perhaps because I come from close-knit family where love is unquestioned and unconditional, no matter what conflicts may be playing out within the family relationships. When thrown amidst such a family a moral dilemma, it becomes tremendously complicated by pushing the limits of relationships, yet aspires irresistibly to solve the problem at the same time.
The situation of a good, morally, upright, young man falling in love with his brother’s fiancee is fraught with fantastic possibility – for all drama to take place. The movie is a romantic comedy with lots of moments that will make you cry and smile at the same time. But, expectantly, the director displays understanding and frothiness of sensitivity in walking the thin line and telling his story as a tale of relationships between different characters rather than a plain tale of forbidden love story. Importantly there are no villains, no fights, no ranting, its Just about ordinary people like you and I, gradual burgeoning of an emotion, called love, from one to another person. When pulled into a situation that just happens, how we deal with it without losing dignity. The fact that both the brothers are essentially nice people made it more difficult choice to choose for Aaliyah.
I think the film has turned out to be a subtle fun film that you can enjoy and not be embarrassed to admitting that it is Bold! The experience of watching actually leaves me rejuvenated for the movie was shot in the stunningly beautiful Mauritius. I think the sea which forms a backdrop very often, somehow eases the tension.
Maybe it’s time to let out a little about what the film story is all about. Five characters, A family, Forbidden love, the sea, the music, the wityy On-Liners and the Wedding
Siddharth Mathur(Sharman Joshi), a shy young geeky scientist who is trying to make a Toy Dog(einstein) fly, travels to Mauritius for his elder brother Harshavardhan Mathurs(Harsh)(Sanjay Suri) wedding. Accompanying him is his Ma - Gayatri Mathur(Shabana Azmi), a reluctant disapproving traveler since she is angry at Harsh for deciding to get married without consulting them. Also travelling is Sids cheery chilled-out father - Navin Mathur(Boman Irani), whose sole entertainment is pulling Mas leg. Harsh works as an investment banker in Mauritius. He invites his family to come over to Mauritius to attend his wedding to Aaliyah "the mysterious one"(Chitrangda Singh). The family of Mom, Dad and younger brother Sid land at Mauritius.
Harsh, pre-occupied with work, can spend little time with his family and it is left to his fiancée Aaliyah to show them around Mauritius before the wedding. However, Mas anger at Harsh ensures that she takes an instant dislike for Aaliyah, and it is Aaliyah and Sid who end up spending loads of time together. This, added to the fact that Aaliyah feels neglected by the career-obsessed Harsh, leads to them being irresistibly drawn to each other. While Harsh doesn’t seem to have much time for his family and his bride-to-be, Sid and Aaliya develop a bond that mushrooms into mutual attraction.
A horrified Sid battles this attraction desperately, but Aaliyah has fallen madly in love and pursues him with single-minded determination. The duo fights this attraction. But before they both could stop, they are already in love. When Sids defenses start crumbling and Ma starts getting suspicious, all hell breaks loose in the Mathur family.
How will the elder brother retort to this love? How will mom and dad take it? That’s for you to see.
The inciting incident takes place in trail room where, a crescendo that the film emotionally builds up from. I thought the voice overs are were quite apt and nice esp between Sid and Aaliya and Aaliya in loo. Simple, Short and animated One liners like “jazz ka bura asar”, “Dhimag Se Nikal tha hi Nahin, Idiot”, “Maa App Muhe mere Mummy Papa Key Bhare mein poochegi Nahin”, "Kab Tak Bhagooge Siddharth, Kab Tk, Tujhe toh Patta key Dhekaoogo, Tujhe Kya, Teri Ma Ko Bhi", "Tu Wohi Soooch raha Hai Joo Main Sooch Raha Hoon", "French, Likhate Kuch Hai Aur Bhoolthe Kuch Hai" and lastlyTu mere Shadi pey Aaya hai Yaar”
Though the film’s subject ventures into “forbidden” territory dealing with something that’s not so easily accepted in Indian Society, gives the film an identity too. It is an unusual, contemporary and boldly treading a thin line and not a straight forward love story. Screenplay and dialogues mostly come like the genteel humour which is witty and at the same time not over the top or sarcastic. The film taps on the bonding between two brothers, between the two women, between two unlikely lovers and between the married couple. Modern Times.
The film was called “My Brother’s Bride”, later changed because it was sounding like “My Brother Nikhil”. I thought "Maa Kasaam" would have suited better or Is it “The Dog Flies”. It just leaves you wondering “What could have been done?” Some people may find the plot of the film outrageous due the complex relationships and breaking of social taboos.
