SS Music

Not many people would know about Southern Spice (SS) Music, except those living in South India. For those hapless souls living in a post-CAS Chennai without a Set -Top Box, SS Music is a lifeline. Let me not waste time and space in explaining CAS. Suffice to say that only people willing to pay astronomical sums of money in Chennai are now able to watch cable TV, while the rest of us struggle with good old DD, Tamil channels and sundry inexplicably odd channels like the German one and a Chinese movie channel. But among all the free to air channels, SS Music is indeed a saving grace. SS Music caters to regional music lovers by playing a lot of film songs in various languages. They also play some pretty decent English music, and do not restrict themselves to the ubiquitous boy bands and girly-pop. Their VJs do not grate on your nerves as much as their MTV counterparts do. I especially like VJ Craig as he’s funny and seems to know his music. Another very good thing about this channel is that they air a lot of local concerts performed by Indian bands. Every now and then they also show full concerts of bands like Queen, etc. Not to say that it’s all good with this channel. Every hour on the dot, there are these lottery draws from Bhutan or Meghalaya or wherever, which can be annoying. I really wonder how popular this is among the majority of the viewers. Anyway SS Music is well worth a watch, so do check it out.
