Season 2 again delivers fine with minor flaws!

Spy films have been a popular genre in Hollywood/Bollywood and several universes have been spawned for the same. The coming of web series in India also started few cult spy series and Neeraj Pandey’s Special Ops starring Kay Kay Menon as Himmat Singh is one of the most popular ones. After a gap of couple of years and after the success of Season 1 and 1.5, the Season 2 of spy saga is there on Hotstar. The series this time is based on Himmat Singh(Kay Kay Menon) and the RAW team and Delhi Police trying to bring back the kidnapped lead scientist Bhargava(Arif Zakaria) from the clutches of international criminal Collector aka Sudheer(Tahir Raj Bhasin). In this plot comes several side plots, hacking, personal life of Himmat, bank frauds, cyber-attacks, world politics and others with many characters. The Season 2 by Neeraj Pandey and Shivam Nair picks up from previous seasons and again takes us on another operation from Indian intelligence team foiling a major threat to the country. This time the makers take on the cyber-attacks and international syndicate trying to weaken our country through it. The makers also have inserted plots of bank fraud, international spies network. They try to remain loyal to the brand value and also insert some new characters while keeping most of the older characters as well. In the process though the series is a gripping saga but sometimes due to multiple plots the pace drops at few places. The production house Friday Storytellers again takes us to exotic international locations like in previous seasons. The production values are great, and background score is good. There are few down points like the personal plot of Himmat and family comes as a jerk to the screenplay. Then the concept of technical hacking is a bit tech centric and relatively lesser action than previous seasons. Though one enjoys the larger-than-life action of the series, but the climax fight looks too simplistic done as compared to the edge of climaxes in previous seasons. Also, some sub plots give you deja-vu feeling from popular Neeraj Pandeys thriller films like A Wednesday and Baby. However, these are few negative points and the plus points more than make the series several notches above the other series. Neeraj Pandey is an expert in espionage and here also the research and execution is fine. His pattern of using some known and unknown recent real life crime incidents keep the viewer interested and also shares a lot of information. The plot is a real threat in modern times, and the team succeeds in sending across the message. The performances by the team of Special Ops is fine. Dalip Tahil(after The Family Man universe also enters Special Ops), Parmeet Sethi, Vinay Pathak, Prakash Raj, Gautami Kapoor are fine. Arif Zakaria, I found ok-ok as the main scientist and maintains a stoic look. Though the main villain character is shown so larger than life I somehow felt Tahir Bhasin was just ok and not that menacing. The show of course again belongs to the great actor KAY KAY MENON! Despite having done so many films, serials and theatres it is HIMMAT SINGH and Special Ops which has given him the biggest following. He again proves his mettle and is truly inside the character in every frame. He along with Neeraj and team again delivers a punch and though there are some loose ends yet Season 2 thrills and entertains us yet again!
