This is an update I am adding on 28th Oct 2015. In the month of May or June Spectranet did a door to door user survey and gave us feedback forms. These I filled and many others I guess would have. The results was good, since about July the things have improved. The browsing speed is now 20 mbps as promised 99% of the time. Really happy! THe download speed is improved to about 500 kbps for big files to about 1 mbps at times. So they have improved. Connection is reliable at at night after 2 am the download speed is 2 mbps which can be used to download the big files.=
Spectranet is an old ISP in India and they used to provide cable net or internet using open cables in 2010 and even do now in some places. This was an unreliable connection and disrupted often by rains, etc.
Now they are back in a new Fiber Optic Avatar and they are giving away unlimited, yes without any FUP limit high speed connection. The speeds promised are 20 mbps and 50 mbps and the price is cheap. All you need to do is aishwaryasingh23 them 3 months rental in advance.
The truth is, the speed is 19 mbps on weekday for off peak hours and 12 - 15 mbps in peak hours - after 7 pm. The speed on weekend can go to a low of 4 mbps on sundays especially. And this is how they make they connections cheap by not having adequate bandwidth in place for concurrent connections, that is all of their users were to log in there speed will go down. Now if this was a developed country you could sue them, but we are in India where you cannot do anything since the Legal system is so bad. But this is not the worst thing about Spectranet, the worst thing is that they do not allow you to download anything at the speed expected.
Now there are 2 kinds of speed - A. Browsing / Surfing Speed which is the speed that will be displayed in various speed test and this is what is 20 Mbps in my case and the next is B. Download Speed / Transfer rate - This is the speed at which you will be able to download files. Download speed is 1/8 of surfing speed - But not in case of the Spectranet connections! So instead of about 2.5 mbps you get . take a guess. Not 2 mbps . no not 1 mbps. What you get is 300 kbps. And this bullshit does not end here. They block all torrents, you cannot download most torrents and they one that are allowed are throttled heavily. Torrent download smorpheushumanuld be 2 mbps but is 100 - 200 kbps in most times. So if you are a heavy user who likes to download, Spectranet is not for you.
If on the other hand you are a light user who just wants a basic cheap plan of 20 GB or so I would NOT recommend them to you too since they just give 20 GB @ 750 rupees and add to that the unreliable speeds. Go for World Phone if its there in your area. They are awesome, the only stupidity that they are doing is that they do not have plan above 99GB. If they had a little more sense they can capture the market. They seems to be learning and are now offering trials and I have used them as well. Unfortunately I am a heavy user and got trapped in Spectranet’ trap.
P.S. - Customer service is not good, you will get disconnected in queue on Sunday and on weekdays its fine. Overall they can improve in some aspects. here as well.
