I know its too late to write this review, but this movie happens to be my all time fav. Cant resist the temptation of leaving this section without my imprints on it.
This movie was one of the first movies which taught me what hollywood was. The name itself had grabbed my attention when I first came to know about it. It was only a year later that I happened to see this movie in 95.
Another reason for me watching this movie was Sandra Bullock. She is cute. ;-))
Speed is a story about a next door guy Jack Traven (KR) who works in the S.W.A.T. of the L.A.P.D. and a revenge full bomber (Dennis Hooper). The movie starts with DH claiming to blow off an express elevator if not given a ransom of around a million dollars. The target to the S.W.A.T. Team: Rescue the hostages and if possible get hold of the extortionist (DH).
Jack with the help of his mate Harry and other officers successfully take out the hostages out of the equation (dialog used in the movie) and bring them to safety.
This is where he recollects that DH blew the bomb before the time line and realizes his presence in one of the freed elevators.
While chasing DH, Jack and Harry happen to meet with a bomb blast and L.A.P.D. assumes the bomber to be dead.
This is where story takes on a great pace. The camera work and the direction from here is just GREAT . Sound effects and acting are also very commendable.
After Jack, Harry and other fellow officers get rewarded by the L.A.P.D. DH comes back and plans a game of life and death for Jack. KR is fabulous over here and this has to be his one of the best performances.
The planned game to Life and Death for Jack turns out to be a game of adventures, excitement and thrills for the audience. The thrilling pace of the movie, the acting, the direction and the sound effects of the movie just make this movie one of the many super duper all time hits.
The movie also boast of some great dialogs and one of my fav. happens to be when the L.A.P.D. S.W.A.T. team lead gives his dialog with great easy and an excellent output : HOW MANY LIVES WILL YOU GET JACK.
The camera work when it comes to the scenes above the elevator, when Jack goes under the bus, when Harry dies, when Jack fights with DH over the train are excellent. But one the best scenes for which this movie is still remembered for is the bus taking a 50 feet leep and landing safely. The producer had spend more than 15% of the total budget of the movie shooting this scene. The entire process of making this scene was shown on discovery and the output is ours to witness.
Although the movie has grown older now but the pace and the thrill it gives is still the same. Frankly speaking this movie happens to the top most is my fav list despite the presence of movies like Gladiator, Catch me if you can, Rocky, MI2, Matrix, Die Hard, The Longest Day, The Mask etc... in the same list.
Thanks a lot for having time to spend on my review. Just wanted this one to be here for the love I have of this movie.
