I am a huge fan of the Spiderman series and I write this review with much hesitation. Spiderman-3 is disappointing and there are many reasons for it. Director Sam Raimi has surely come a long way from directing the evil dead series to the spiderman ones. This is by far his weakest attempt. S3 is just not worth all the hype.
We miss so many things this time. First and foremost, we miss the cute Peter Parker. He is a confident guy now...so much so that his success goes to his head and he becomes proud in an evil way. Tobey Maguire does well as Spiderman (however, the script doesnt allow him to emerge as a hero in the climax. Poor boy! He is made to be not powerful enough to fight two villains!) but this time, he fails to bring forward the innocence of Peter Parker. Its not his fault, though. The script is to be blamed again. Secondly, we miss the villains who were there in the prequels (Green Goblin and Dr. Octopus).
This time, there are three of them but not one of them is captivating enough. Sandman is created well but frankly speaking, he is not dangerous. Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane performs badly....again because of the loose ends in the script. Agrred! Her character is supposed to be confused. Here she is engaged to Peter but she still kisses his friend (just because Peter did the same thing with another girl!). What was the director thinking about while filming most of the shots? What a half-baked product? What a waste of a golden opportunity. The SFX is good. But, it was equally good in the prequels.
So, will it do well commercially? Ofcourse, it will! It will do a better business than the prequels, only because of the hype it generated even before its release. But if you ask me....S1 was the best, S2 was good and this is only an average flick. Should you watch it? Please do...Its worth a watch if you have watched the prequels. If you havent, give it a miss.
