Sri Lanka, the more I see you the more I love you.

I have visited Sri Lanka many times. My visit was in 1984 when I went there to attend a Conference on ’Education for Peace’. I had read a lot about Sri Lanka, and learnt more about the beautiful country and its friendly people from two Sri Lankan families who were with us in Indonesia in the UNDP/FUNDWI community. As an Oriya, I can always say that Sanghamitra was a daughter of Kalinga. After 1984, I have visited Sri Lanka many times. My last visit was in May 2001. I was there to attend the Annual General Meeting of the Worldview International Foundation, of which I am a Vice- President and an International Conference on ’Media for Democracy’. WIF has its Headquarters at Colombo. It is an international media organization. If you had seen a TV programme, titled ’Young*Asia Television’, then it was produced by WIF.I have some of my best friends in Sri Lanka. I wonder whether any one of them will go through this review of mine. The landscape is simply superb. Driving from the Airport to the City always gives me the feeling that I am in Kerala. The train journey from Colombo to Kandy took me through some rare beauty spots of the world. It was an unforgettable experience. The road-side statues of Lord Buddha and the statue at the Kandy Temple are superb ones creating a feeling of reverence in the mind of the visitor. The Sinhala people are from Orissa-Bengal stock. The Sinhalese language has many root words from Sanskrit. The LTTE problem is India’s creation, for which I am really ashamed. And Sinhalese food? It is very similar to that of Orissa. The Mulgattani Soup is very similar to the Oriya Kanjee in taste. Both use almost the same ingredients. Sinhalese Mask Dances are similar to the Chhou (Masked) Dance of Mayurbhanj (Orissa) and Sareikala (Bihar). Sinhala Tea has a strong flavour, which is also liked in India. This time I could not visit Anuradhapura. If my friend, the Hon’ble Sarath Amunugama again gets a ministerial berth, I might be able to go as a State Guest. I have also lived in Moratuwa with my friend Ariyartatna of Sarvodaya Shramadana. My friend Buddy from the Open University has invited me to visit his office, when he learnt that I have experience in Distance Education. Meeting Sir Arthur Clarke, and talking with him was very inspiring. He is now very old, but is a remarkable man. He must have been thrilled at the successful launching of INSAT-1C yesterday. Oh Dear, I am getting nostalgic, but I forget that I am writing on the Country which is most dear to my heart. Sri Lanka, I love you.
