Before I start writing a review on sunny deol, I must say he is a very good actor, but he pissed me off in a couple of movies so I didn’t include him in my favorite actor list - Out of te 10 actors he stands 7th on the list.
Sunny deol was born to film star dharmendras ajay singh deol. He is 5’’9, but he doesn’t look like 5’’9 in movies. He made his debut as a teenage romantic hero in the movie betaab with co ctar amrita singh and the movie was directed by rahul rawail.
The movie did very well and sunny was nominated for best actor in 1983. The movie has some of the best songs in bollywood, including jabhum jawan hongey jaane kahan hongey, badal kiyon garajta hai and parwaton se aaj mein takra gaya tumne di awaz lo mein a gaya. At time when sunny entered the movies anil kapoor, jackie shroff and sanjay dutt were newcomers on the screen also, so there was a lot of competition.
Sunny made his own image from the movie arjun as an action hero and the movie was directed by rahul rawail again. Arjun saw sunny deol as an action hero, although he did do couple of movies after betaab like sohni mahiwal, manzil manzil and sunny but were unnoticed at the box office. Then arjun hit the screens in 1985 and sunny was back as a hit actor.
With Dacaiti in 1987 and Yateem in 1989 sunny graduated into a barechested bulging biceps action hero, the desi version of arnold scharwznegger. jp dutta’s yateem set the ideal setting for sunny’s next realease ghayal directed by rajkumar santoshi became one of the most critical acclaimed successes of the 90’s.
Sunny acted in a number of multistarrers like paap ki duniya, vardi, ram avtar, tridev, and kshatriya.
Among his notable performances were Narsimha created more news for thew roaring affair between sunny and dimple kapdia then for his acting talents , he won a national award for his acting in the movie damini though only making a appearence after the interval sunny simple takes over the film, which was a another success and directed by rajkumar santoshi. Darr with juhi chawla and shahrukh khan saw sunny in a romantic role where his famous hathodawala hand is put to use only in the ending.
There is so much talk about sunny deol’s dancing the actor has never learned to dance, he tried proved that in the movie jeet while dancing with karishma kapoor in the song name yaara o yaaara, but that mistake never happened again. Jeet was a another hit in sunny deol’s career and again it was a action packed role.
There are certain things that sunny deol can’t do one is dancing, but neither good actors like naseruddin shah, rajkumar, shatrughan sinha has danced better in their movies. I have never seen naseruddin shah dance, at least sunny has the guts to dance on the screen.
The talk about his comedy, he can do comedy, only when a good director is directed him. In rajkumar santoshi’s ghatak we saw sunny in the angriest role ever as kaashi naath who wipes out entire 6 brother of danny in the movie and then danny at the end.
The movie is worth a watch with sunny deol’s dialogue delivery the best dialogues in hindi movies are in the movie ghatak. He shared great chemistry with amrish puri in ghatak it looked like a real father and son relationship. The emotional scene where sunny finds out that amrish puri has only about a month to leave d ue to his cancer is worth a watch. Anyone who says sunny can’t do emotional scenes watch ghatak.
In 2001 anil sharma got sunny in the movie called gadar ek prem katha which sent the cash register ringing, although lagaan went into the oscar nomination in america sunny deol’s gadar made more money then lagaan. The theatres were housefull in punjab. He was nominated for best actor.
He received a lux zee award for best actor. Sunny deol was already popular with two directors rahul rawal and raj kumar santoshi, He had not have a flop with these two directors. Probably his best performance is in movie called yateem, my favorite movie of sunny deol, which did okay business at the box office.
Vishwatma was a another movie that was hit mostly because of the performances by sunny deol and naseruddin and the song sat samundar par mein tere peeche peeche a gayie which was a huge hit at that time. He starred with sanjay dutt in movies like yodha, kshtariya and krodh, which did about average business.
In 1993 lootere saw sunny deol in a action and romantic role The movie was directed by darmesh darhshan which was a another hit and sunny gave a another good performance along with anupam kher and naseruddin shah. Ziddi and Arjun pandit were another great action movies and arjun pandit got an action award of the year for the movie.
After Gadar in 2001 sunny deol’s bad days and all of his movies flopped like, kasam, indian, maa tujhe salaam, 1931 shaheed in which I though he should have been given a award for supporting actor, jaani dushman a teribble movies I don’t know what he was doing in the movie, karz, The hero, jaal, lakeer, rok sako tu rok lo and khel. HIs performance in khel was awardworthy.
Sunny deol had also directed the movie dillagi his homeproduction in which we saw both deol brother bobby and sunny deol, but the movie went wrong at the box office, but I thought it wasn;t a bad movie.
Sunny deol is the actor who beat amitabh bachnan for the award for ghayal when the same year amitabh bachnana gave his best performance for agneepath. When ghatak came out nobody mentioned sunny deol’s performance in that movie, people need to watch that movie carefully and see the best dialogue delivery and one of the best acting performances by a underrated actor in bollywood.
He is married to pooja deol, He has two children and bobby deol his younger brother and the new actor of bollywood abhay deol is his cousin and actress esha deol is his sister.

Hi;s forthcoming movies include jo bole so nihal in which the the singer kamal khan is making a debut as a villain. Devdar gandhi which is coming this year. The challenge is with Tabu.
