Stars: Jay Chandrasekhar, Paul Soter, Brian Cox
Super Troopers is the second feature-film directed by its predominate star Jay Chandrasekhar (Puddle Cruiser) & it proves how low-budget film-making can be a hit in the face of giant Hollywood productions. The film is actually the brainchild of a comedy troupe known as Broken Lizard, whose members occupy most of the main roles.
The film itself is not especially fresh or ingenuitive --- & theres no opportunity to stargaze with the biggest name probably being Daniel Von Bargen, vaguely recognisable for a role as Jason Alexanders absent-minded boss on former sitcom Seinfeld. But it doesnt matter --- both the writing & acting range from amusing to hilarious & the movie doesnt tire late in the game. You get plenty of cheap laughs but never ones that hurt the credibility of the film.
Its fast, its enjoyable & its largely meaningless --- just a fun way to pass an hour & a half, with only a few dry spots as the comedy rolls on. Kevin Heffernan (Big Helium Dog), as the obnoxious Rodney Farva, is a masterstroke to look out for.
