My review

’Supposed..’ as opposed to the Alanis’ Debut ’Jagged Little pill’ is a more self-indulgent album, the sort success gives you the freedom to produce. Some songs have been inspired by her trip to India, probably there appears to be the same sort of detachment (from commercial concerns) that was evident in the music of Beatles after their trip to India. This album also received a grammy.

’Supposed..’ has some great songs, ’Thank You’ and ’Unsent’ captivate the listener, and they will surely rank among the best that Alanis has ever produced. The lyrics are as searching as they were in ’Jagged..’, and Alanis’ voice lends some magic realism to them, for instance in ’Ur’:

’’burn the books they’ve got too many names and psychoses

all this incriminating evidence would surely haunt me

if someone broke into my house’’

Whats lacking in ’Supposed..’, is that the album does not appear coherent. ’Front Row’ and ’Thank You’ are separated by the avoidable and rather grotesque ’Baba’. Good in parts, this album gives you enough reasons to pick it up. If you are trying Alanis for the first time, go for ’jagged ..’ first. Definitely better than her recent album ’Under the rug swept’.

ps: Alanis has also released her new album ’feast on scraps’, lets see what this holds for the fans!
