*A few early minutes of “Taare Zameen Par” and one can say with
certainty every minute of eager anticipation has been well spent. Aamir
Khan’s first film at the helm of affairs tells us you do not need a
convulsion to make history.
“Taare. is a film worth every second you spend in the cinema hall. Time
and money’s worth, here Aamir takes half a step beyond the parameters
of conventional Bollywood-style filmmaking.
Understated yet authoritative, he makes full use of Amol Gupte’s wonderful script.
The story revolves around a dyslexic child Darsheel Safary(Ishaan
Awasthi) who faces difficulties in school and is not properly
understood by impatient parents because of his learning disabilities. His performance in school is poor and hence father sends him off to a
boarding school. Darsheel does not like the boarding school and misses
his parents and elder brother. He becomes a recluse at
the boarding school.
Now, enters Aamir Khan(Ram Shankar Nikumbh), as an art teacher, in
the boarding school. He quickly realizes Darsheel’s learning
difficulties and takes upon himself to bring joy in little boy’s life. How Aamir Khan successfully converts Darsheel’s parents, teachers and
others compassionate towards Darsheel, makes the remaining part of the
film.
The first half of the film is an emotional roller-coaster of a
time-machine that instantly refreshes memories and takes you back to
the days you cried in school. The pangs of home-work and the bliss of
innocence.
The performance by Darsheel Safary is first rate.He is successful in
portraying the mental trauma of a child suffering from dyslexia with
ease and looks every bit natural. Aamir Khan gives a sterling performance as an art teacher in the film and his portrayal is very sensitive.Others provide able support to the main cast.
The direction of Aamir Khan is just superb showing his mastery in
the craft of cinema. He has handled the subject with complete
sensitivity. The music by Shankar-Ehsaan- Loy is superb. The numbers ‘
Maa’ and ‘Bum bum bole’ are especially good.
"Taare." is hardly perfect, it is so full of life and innocence that
it makes you laugh, cry, reminisce and re-look at life and children,
quite effortlessly.A film you should see today so that you don’t make the mistakes the parents of the protagonist do here.
