I cannot tell you how long it has been since I watched a movie in the theatres, because I can’t remember it either. Anyway, I finally managed to catch Tamasha in theatres at 10: 30 AM on a Monday morning. Oh, the joys of college!
Over the weekend a number of people had warned me about how terrible the movie was and how it should be avoided. However, I was adamant on watching it. I went in with very low expectations, I admit.
The movie starts in the present day with a scene in a play and goes on to tell the story of how this play or “Tamasha” came into being. A chance meeting in Corsica between the protagonists, Tara and Ved( Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor), pretending to be somebody else on purpose reveals elements of both their personalities, before they go along their separate ways. After another encounter, years apart can those elements reflect from the people they really are in their everyday lives?
The locations are beautiful- from Corsica to Kolkata and from Delhi to Japan. The story moves quite quickly and the past is interspersed with the present, making it quite a riveting watch, mostly due to the actors.
However, the story seems to be quite unoriginal and seems like the basic plot has remained unchanged in quite a few recent movies directed by Imtiaz Ali. It becomes quite predictable pretty much from the get-go. The movie has its funny bits and fills you with major wanderlust, but I left the theatre pretty uninspired and would not spare a second thought to what the movie wishes to convey.
The music however, is beautiful and A.R. Rahman is a genius. The songs beautifully capture the essence of the scenes. The chemistry between the actors is amazing as usual and they, along with the music make it an acceptable film.
I would recommend you go watch it if you like Imtiaz Ali’s direction and way of storytelling, but be warned that it is pretty much the same story with different characters. Its time he narrates a new story. About these ads
