Revisit -Indica Petrol V2 Lsi - Aug 2002

Review : Have now completed nearly 3 years & 70000kMs. Mixed feelings. Problem of corroding silencer was solved by fitting expensive stainless steel version. Alternator failed once & had to be replaced by paying for it.Support to gear box failed & had to be replaced. Bridgestone tyres started developing bulges on sides & had to be replaced as risky for higher speeds on expressway / highways. Mileage has come down to 10-11 in city.

However, it is giving good service & our family likes it due to spacious interiors & robustness. There is also pride that it is an Indian car which has withstood competition of Palio & other foreign brands. I feel that Indica Diesel would have been a better choice which is equaly spacious & with higher mileage & lower running costs.I have heard only praise from every user of India Diesel model V2 onwards & no problem on silencer. After travelling in so many Diesel Indicas, I wonder whether the argument of noise, vibration & consequent high repair costs of Diesel which was the reason favouring Petrol cars was right.

I will recommend Diesel version for my friends & not Petrol.

Earlier review -Have completed 2 years with 45000 kM. No major problem experienced. Silencer got corroded & replaced once. Service was available at small towns also & hence did not suffer. Family of 5 including 3 grown up children moves comfortably at various places during holidays. With its rugged structure , good grip even at curves & powerful engine can keep high speed even on steep inclines on Mumbai Pune expressway & other highways/ decent roads reducing travel time which was not possible earlier with Maruti 800. Comfortable upto 120 kM speed. Feel more comfortable in back seat than in Scorpio. Had retrofitted power windows of other makes (not OEM model) which sometimes get stiff. May be they would have been more careful with windows if the power windows were factory fitted & checked. Get 11-12 kM/litre Petrol in city & 14-16 on highway. Surprisingly it consumes more petrol while coming back from Pune than going there uphill. Can some expert comment & advice? To conclude, family feels that it was a good decision to go for it & will repeat the same if a new car is to be purchased in the same price band. Competitors considered were Zen, Palio, Wagon R , Alto & Santro. Still wondering whether Diesel version would have been better as it reportedly gives higher mileage.

Pros : Spacious, sturdy, good road grip & high power

Cons: Not as silent & vibration damping as on higher end cars.High Petrol cos
