Headlines on 05-October-2004, ?Tehelka Commission dissolved!? When I read that, believe it or not I started laughing! And I laughed and laughed till my mom shouted at me that I must have gone mad. Know why I laughed?
I visualized our former Defense Minister, George Fernandes being carried away by the top cops as had happened to Mr. Vaiko in Chennai when our prominent AIADMK leader Jayalalitha had him arrested under POTA. Same way, legs folded (but wearing a kurta pajama this time) at the middle of night and the party supporters shouting anti-government slogans. Oh yes, we are in for a series of high drama in the coming days.
Isn?t it ironic that every time a new government comes into power, we see all kinds of unimaginable events taking place around us? So many stage shows come into play that we ought to write them down and start directing serials on them (Become the next Kapoor!) and no need to assure you that success will be yours.
Taking our investigation committees outcome in various cases, it makes one wonder what if the CBI (which has now being given the task to investigate the TEHELKA evidence) does it the same dillydallying way the previous commission had did taking all the time in this world to go over the same videos watching the military top brass accepting wads of cash?
But it seems the previous commission wanted to go over them real slowly and steadily and wrap up the matter in some 15 ? 20 years such that by that time, who knows the people being incriminated (most of them are in their mid-60?s or 70?s) still are sticking around or not or have already done their transcending to the next world!
No, it?s not going to happen. Some one else is in power now and the CBI investigation has been pronounced by the central government. If history is taken into consideration, any commission which has been setup by the running government to probe into matters incriminating the opposition has always led to some headlines, cover stories and nightmarish days for the ones being pointed out. In this case, something is going to definitely materialize but if it is done whether on a concrete basis or not still remains a question.
The vehement hue and cry being made by the BJP in the decision of the centre to take this step itself shows that bad days lie ahead for them. Their success in protecting Mr. Fernandes after his resignation and after some hibernation bringing him back into the game was a success story but it did not end their. Ball being now in the current government?s court, a Roberto Carlos penalty shot is being done with all might and some heads are going to roll.
But getting apprehensive about it is not justice as everyone knows, the unthinkable happens in our judicial probes. Let?s take a wait and see attitude and see the outcome of this newly launched sequence which wouldn?t have been produced without the TEHELKA?s tactful directing and productive interference.
