The unforgettable....

Long after we see a movie. the story line gets faded from memory, the scenery(rather the cinematography) becomes a hazy picture, the faces of the stars get merged with other film images… but what stands out still fresh is the punch line of the movie, a strong dialogue delivered or even a couple of words which made all the difference….

From the standard Kutte Kamine, Bachaao…., mein tumhari bete ki maa ban ne waali hoon… to more localized dialogues… even small names or phrases, such as Babumosaai(Anand), Shakhi(Bemisaal) or even kkkkk Kiran(Darr)…all remain fresh.

Here is my list of ten movies with best sense of dialogues. This list is in alphabetic order. The names in brackets are the dialogue writers.

Aandhi(Gulzaar):

What can I say about a movie, where every thing was a landmark? The dialogues were subtle, in common language, but had significant impact.

My favourite: “Vaise to amavas 15 din ki hi hoti hai. lekin is baar bahut lambi thi”

Anand(Gulzar)

This Hrishikesh Mukherjee film is still fresh in all our minds. Apart from a strong storyline, it had a great selection of dialogues with perfect timing. No matter how many times you see it, the dialogues sound as good as the first time.

My favourite: “Chelaa jaate jate guru ko sikhaa gayaa”(Johny Walker when he meets Rajesh Khanna for the last time)

Deewar(Javed Akhtar)

Released in the same year as Sholay and Aandhi, this movie managed to make its on niche in the film goers mind. There are many one liners in the movie that have become folklore since then.

My favourite: of course… the simple and emphatic “Mere paas maa hai”

Dilwale Dulhaniyaa Le Jaayenge(Javed Siddiqqi)

The modern day landmark film from the Yashraj banner. The dialogues of this film went on to become the standard conversation for many youths in love and are spoken of even today, after ten years since release.

My favourite: “Bade bade desho mein, chhoti chhoti galtiyaan hote hain”

Herapheri(Neeraj Vora)

Who says that good dialogue has always to be serious? Look at Hera Pheri. One key aspect that made the movie such a laugh riot was the witty dialogues and their timing. There are many in the movie which never fail to make us laugh.

My favourite: “Uthaa le… kaise uthaaloon, kam se kam challis kilo ki hogi”

Lamhe(Dr. Rahi Masoom Reza)

How can I possibly leave my favourite movie out of the list? Agreed, there may not be a single dialogue that may stand out as an alltime great dialogue, but the way they have been crafted, gives them a complete image of what great story telling is all about.

My favourite: “Upparwalla ka sense of humor bhi sick hotaa jaa rahaa hai. bahot badaa practical joke maraa hai aapni taraf se”.

Mughal-E-Azam(Aman)

Another landmark cinema in every sense of it. Do not want to write much about it… no matter what I say, it would still be less.

My favourite: “ye kaneez Jalaluddeen Mohammad Akbar ko aapna khoon muaf karti hai’’

Pakeezah(Kamal Amrohi?)

A film which is mostly known for its music and dialogues. It was a landmark in Indian Cinema which immortalized the tragedy queen image of Meena Kumari.

My favourite: Do I need to say? Of course. “Aapke Paon Dekhe; Bahut Haseen Hain – Inhe Zameen Pe Naa Utariyega…. Maile Ho Jayenge.”

Sharabi(Kader Khan)

Another Bog B flick, another movie with great dialogues… nothing to increase your blood pressure, nothing to make you a a lot sentimental, nothing which would give a hysteric laugh… but still the dialogue was excellent.

My favourite: "Muchhein ho to Natthulal jaisi, barnaa naa ho”

Sholay(Salim – Javed)

Each dialogue of this movie was a landmark. In fact, I can make a list of 25 great dialogues and all from Sholay. May it be the funny “sussaaid” or the more intense “yeh haath mujhe de de thakur”. each dialogue is worth remembering.

My favourite: … well… there are so many. Hence I am giving a list of 15 greatest dialogues from Sholay…

Yeh haath mujhe de de thakurTera naam kya hai re Basanti?

Aare ho Shambhaa… sarkaar hamarey liye kitna inaam rakha hai?

Yahaan itnaa sannataa kyuun hai bhai?
