Going Home

Well summer has come and gone, and the trips to grandmas and going home to Texas are all but a fine memory now. Talk has started already about next years trip and what they would do.

When we go home to visit my mother-in-law, one of my favorite places to go is to the cross. This thing can be seen from miles away and is the most beautiful sight that I have ever seen. That is until you get up closer and get to walk the stations of the cross. I am telling you that it is just like you were there. The statues are so life like that my son actually sat down and cried at the pain he saw on Jesus’ face. One little boy from VBS actually kicked the guard who was hurting Jesus. We all had to turn our heads and laugh and then tell him that he should not do that.

My children do, however, look forward to their yearly trip to Wonderland. This is the amusement park which is located in Amarillo, Texas. I must say that as amusement parks go, the price is quite reasonable. It was $7.00 a person. (This was a special that you had to ask for at the gate and was not given unless asked for) One drawback for children is that the park is only open from 7pm to 10:30pm. This was plenty of time for me, but; you know children---3 1/2 hours is never enough time.

I found Wonderland to be a good park for my varied ages of children. There was a children’s area that was great for my three and five year old. It came complete with the merry-go-round, boats, toy cars, airplanes, and train rides. A new feature that was added since our last visit was the ’’Frogger’’. This ride would go up in the air and then jump down as a frog would. This was my children’s favorite ride and we spent a great deal of time there.

Then, I have two boys ages six and seven. They enjoyed the smaller roller coasters and the water rides. We managed to talk the ride attendants into letting us take our three year old on the log ride and the cyclone. We now refer to him as COASTER MAN, as he would refuse to get off and had to ride two or three times straight before finally being persuaded to go on. My boys seemed to like the sky tram and the ever lovable ferris wheel the best. Of course, not park would be complete without it’s own version of the haunted house. This one was not designed to give you nightmares, but did make you jump out of your seat once or twice.

A parents job done, and all rides ridden at least a dozen times, it was time to leave our children with grandma (who likes to keep her feet planted firmly on the ground) and join our eighteen year old on the big rides. One of my personal favorites was The Texas Tornado. This is the parks main attraction. It was by far not the biggest coaster that I have been on, but was good for a few negative ’’G’s’’ and one or two tummy thrills. Another good ride was one of their water slides. The name of the ride escapes my mind at present. (I am sure it was something Texan.) Anyway, you climbed up this slide and then it dropped you 75 feet straight down. I am talking straight down. There were several people who made it to the top and then either had to be coaxed down or refused all together.

Then, of course, like any good park--the midway is lined with food stands and video games. My personal favorite has always been the funnel cakes. Popcorn and hot-dogs, I can have at home anytime, but a good funnel cake is hard to pass by
