Thai Cuisine! Different Country..Same Name!

Thai Cuisine, is a wonderful restaurant I visited while in Louisiana. It is a tiny little, dark restaurant with only 8 tables, fast service and a great waitstaff!

When you walk in, you are seated at a small table which is set beautifully with a linen tablecloth and napkins. Lovely oriental inspired dishes and bamboo handled flatware add to the quaintness of the restaurant.

Since we had never eaten Thai food before, the waiter gladly explained what each dish was to us...and we ordered and ate a most enjoyable meal.

We liked it so much we ate there twice aweek for the next 3 weeks while we were in Louisiana!

I’d like to share some information about Thai food with you that I learned from the people running the restaurant and the waitstaff (who we became quite friendly with.)

Thailand, once known as Siam , has some of the absolutely best of all the Asian foods.   You can get everything from delicate noodle dishes, fine vegetarian selections and curries.   Most of the soups are made from a base of coconut milk or rich fish broth. For example, you can get my favorite, TOM GAR GAI, which is a delicate coconut milk broth, with fresh ginger, lemon grass and lime juice simmered together with a wonderful mixture of spices and big tender chunks of chicken. And if that doesn’t delight you, you could go with a bowl of TOM YUM GOONG, which is a wonderful fish broth seasoned with cilantro and straw mushrooms, a bit of garlic and delicious shrimp.   An example of noodle dishes are, GARUDA, which is a mixture of glass noodles, chili peppers, curry powder, coconut cream and garlic, with roasted shrimp and (strange as it sounds) a doppup of sour cream or yogurt to stir into this really tasty, and a bit spicy dish.   Another one of my favorites is a chicken specialty called CHICKEN ROYALE SOMBOON. It’s a whole chicken breast stuffed with a mixture of chopped pork, shrimp and assorted veggies topped with a sweet peanut sauce. If you prefer beef, I’d recommend a great unique taste of BANGCOCK BEEF. Stir-fried slices of beef topped with a fantastic oyster sauce and usually served with sauteed or stir-fried veggies. Also, if you’d prefer seafood, you could always try some really good CLAYPOT FISH, which is usually a combination of shrimp, squid and the ’’catch of the day’’ fish served in a clay pot which has been filled with fish stock and an assortment of veggies, tofu and glass noodles and simmered until perfect and served to you in the pot it was cooked in.   You can also order regular curry dishes, such as RED CURRY. which is the HOT curry, made with either chicken or beef. Or if that’s too HOT for you, order GREEN CURRY, which is a milder selection.   There are also many vegetarian dishes to choose from, like, VEGETABLE CURRY(red or green). Which is a mixture of assorted veggies and tofu served as a curry. There is also PHAT WOON SEN, which is tofu, mushrooms, baby corn and sweet peppers, served with glass noodles in a peanut sauce.   A new dish I tried the other night is called PAD PIRIK, which is a combination of, shrimp, squid, eel and tofu cooked in a sweet curry paste mixed with bamboo shoots. Very unique.   (I really hope I got the spelling of all these unique and delicious dishes correct.)

So, here I’ve given you an example of the wonderful Thai foods we tried and enjoyed.

I believe Thai food is the most unusual combination of food and spices in Asian cooking. And I believe it is a combination of all the different Eastern foods put together to form a tasty treat for anyone wanting to try something new.

Each meal cost us a flat rate of $10.00 (US) and we were totally full and satisfied each time.

So if you’re ever in New Orleans Louisiana, stop in for some great food....And don’t forget some HOT SAKI or JASMINE TEA to accompany your meal!
