I am somewhat of an authority on Tintin since I have read all the Tintin comics with the exception of ’Tintin in the land of the Soviets’ atleast 100 times. Its not an exaggeration. I couldnt eat at mealtime if I did not have a comic and it was Tintin or Asterix that were recycled constantly.
Tintin is great - a part of my childhood and all that - but is pipped at the post by Asterix. I’ll cover Asterix in another review. Tintin has the trademark of a classic with rich color and exciting copy. The characters are endearing and there is movement in each plate. Its as good as watching a cartoon. The stories are timeless and yet period. I mean the stories establish the 1930’s England setting but have universal appeal in their story-lines. That’s why people still go crazy over this series even now almost 70 year later.
But having said that, some of the drawbacks I see are that Tintin comics are sometimes set in reality. From a comic you expect a certain suspension of belief. Sometimes that’s missing. The pictures are also somewhat simply sketched. Though god only knows that’s probably an artist’s greatest talent. But purely from a comic point of view, I personally would like to see some fantasy. (And this is a personal opinion anyway)
Overall 99 out 100 for the series.
