Like every other person, I had heard a lot about this movie and had planned to watch it since its release. But somehow a movie based on racism and football was not appealing me. Nevertheless this weekend I vowed that I would watch this movie. And trust me I thoroughly enjoyed those two hours. The movie is neither about football nor about racism. The protagonist, Michael is an American African who is supported by a white Christian upper class lady and her family and who coincidentally discovers his skills in football and slowly falls in love with it. But any hint of racism or football ends here.
The movie is about compassion and kindness. Big mike or Michael, an American African is clearly an underdog. His big size is often ridiculed by people, he is orphan, had an abusive childhood and lacks intellect and skills. The only quality or skill that he has is his protective instinct which eventually leads him to overcomes all hurdles.
Leigh anne, an upper class white woman gives shelter to Michael when she finds him straying alone in a cold night. What starts as an accommodation for one night ends with his adoption as her son.and thus starts a process which alters Michael’s and leigh’s and her family’s life. Michael has no skill as such excepts his protective instinct and this wins him leigh’s and her family love and makes him a legend in football. This is a beautiful family drama which makes you laugh and makes you feel good. It can certainly be recommended to a cynic or misanthrope.
The top class acting by the characters does deserve all the applauds it has gather. Bullock, Aaron and Head are the highlights of the film. Head as S.J is hilarious and adorable. tim Mcgraw as leigh husband is very charming and the warmth of their relationship is palpable.
It is based on a true story. Good to know that human spirit and kindness still exists. and I am glad I watched this movie.
