The Economist is a weekly magazine, published from London by The Economist Newspaper Limited. It was first published in 1843. It has editorial offices in London and In Bangkok, Beijing, Berlin, Brussels, Cairo, Delhi, Edinburgh, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, Johannesburg, LOs Angeles, Mexico, Moscow, New York, Paris, San Fransisco, Sao Paulo, Tokyo and Washington.
I have been subscribing for this international news magazine since the last two decades. When I was in Delhi, I used to buy it from the News Stand. It is available in all the international hotels all over the world, and in the Newspaper kiosks of all the international airports. Each issue costs Rs.200.00 only, An annual subscription costs $ 165.00, about Rs.4000.00, payable through all major Credit Cards. Quite expensive according to Indian standards, but I find it essential to have it for professional reasons. It is printed in art paper, always has a good cover design in colour, and is about 150 pages.
The Economist contains very perceptive and interesting articles and features, besides job advertisements and announcements regarding Courses and Competitions. I find the job advertisements very interesting and useful; and have put my CV in the Databases of some of the best Recruiting Agencies. Every issue of The Economist has an Obituary page.
I have before me the Special Double Issue ( Volume 365, Number 8304 ) of the magazine dated ’December 21st 2002-January 3rd 2003’ received yesterday. In page 9, it has ’A year of surprises’, in page 23 ’National warning from Gujarat’, in page 98, ’Steven Spielberg, Luddite’, and in page 91, ’Internet success stories.’In the Obituary it features Dee Brown, Historian of the American west. Under Science and technology, this issue deals with Space telescopes and the cosmic microwave background. Its language, from arts to science & technology, is always has been highly readable. Science & Technology and regional news coverage are the regular features of this magazine. The last few pages always give economic indicators.
The photographs, both in black & white and in colour, are the best examples of photo journalism. Can I afford to miss this truly international news magazine ?
