The Giving Tree

I added this book to my physical world bookshelf years ago. I read it several times, but mostly in front of children.

Talking to others, I realized that they really disliked this book. I like this book because it makes me uncomfortable. The same is true of Shel Silverstein’s "Missing Piece."

Both can be read in less than 15 minutes, so I don’t really care about spoilers. Basically, trees are friends with boys. The tree frees a boy to deliver apples from the playground, eventually sacrificing himself as lumber. The tree never regrets being so generous. He never questions what the boy wants from him. Even if the boy is old and the tree is best sitting on a stump, there is no grudge.
