The Legend of Bhagat singh, as the name suggests is a movie which showcases the life of Bhagat Singh and the sacrifices he made to try to get freedom for our country.
The movie is directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and stars Ajay Devgan as Bhagat Singh. This movie follows the whole life of Bhagat Singh. The gist of the movie is as follows.
Bhagat Singh grows up in an environment where he sees the British committing untold tyrannies upon the Indians. So he vows to join the freedom struggle and get freedom for India. When he is in college, he teams up with Sukhdev and other like minded persons and joins the Hindustan republican Association which is later renamed to Hindustan Socialist Republican Association.
They continue to struggle for freedom, the violent way i.e Tit for Tat.Due to this they are branded as terrorists by their own people, most importantly the Congress party led by Gandhiji. So they hatch a plan to make people aware as to why they are doing all the things which are being branded as Violence.
They bomb the Parliament when it is in progress, surrender to the police and from the prison, they explain to everyone the reason behind their doings. They undergo immense physical torture day in and day out but still manage to turn the people in their favour. The british realize the growing threat that Bhagat was becoming, so they reopen a murder case in which Bhagat and his friends are involved, and sentence them to death. Thus 3 brave men die on the 23rd of March 1931.
The movie is directed very well by Rajkumar Santoshi. From the opening scene, which shows Bhagat and his Comrades being smuggled out unknown to anyone and being burnt, to the end, one cannot find fault with the movie at all. There are many scenes in the film which stand out for their execution like
The Scene where Bhagat and his comrades line up for a fight with a group of Britishers playing Cricket
The Scene when Bhagat explains as to why he wants to join the freedom struggle
The Scene in which ChandraSekhar Azad kills himself
The Scene in the court where everybody learns how to make bombs
The Scene where Bhagat demands equal rights to both Foreign and Indian prisoners and also the scene where the British offer the inmates Milk when they are on a hunger strike and lots more....
infact the movie itself is a collection of heart rendering scenes which brought tears to my eyes on more than one occasion scenes and dialogues. Some of the standout dialogues are
Shama karo maa, itni hee seva kar saka
I am saying either leave our country sir, or get thrown out
Bas ek bar desh ke liye mar jaoon, fir chain se poori zindagi jee loonga
paaji naa ye baat meri roti khaane ki hai or nahi ye sirf mere akele ki
The film portrays Gandhi in a very negative aspect.Bhagat singh and his comrades are not at all agreeable with what Gandhi says and this is shown throughout the film.
Coming to Performances Ajay Devgan gives a standout performance as Bhagat singh. He portrays every aspect of the character perfectly and with subtle expressions....One of his if not the best performance to date.Sushant Singh also plays the role of Sukhdev very well, as does Rajguru(dont knoe his real name).
The Character of Chandra Sekhar Azad is also given due importance and it has been brilliantly portrayed too...The supporting actors like Farida Jalal, Raj Babbar also give fine performances. There is not much scope for Amrita Rao but what little she does, she does well
Technically also the film is top notch. The sets erected are simply out of the world and give the feel of the 1920s India. The Cinematography is very good.
The songs and the BGM, by A R Rahman are one of the major backbones of the film. All the songs are really well placed and are perfect for the occassion except maybe the love song between Ajay and Amrita Rao.The songs are heart rendering, especially the Sarfaroshi song sung by the inmates in the Jail. How they sing the song and pep up their saggin spirits is well shown and it brought tears to my eyes.
To think that people had gone for Hunger strikes for 55 days to try to bring freedom to the country speaks volumes about their patriotism.....
This movie I would say is a must watch for all Indians...not only for entertainment...but to seek the truth and see how the people struggled to bring freedom to our country.I have seen this movie many times but it never fails to bring tears out of my eyes.I cant comprehend why this movie did not get its due at the box office......but it is definitely a must watch.....
