The Moonstone is one of the first detective novels ever written by Wilkie Collins and was published in 1868. The story revolves around the moonstone, a kind of precious diamond, which was stolen from an ancient Hindu temple by an Englishman, Colonel Herncastle. Upon the Colonels death, it was presented to his niece, Rachel Virendher as a birthday gift from where it was stolen again. The most interesting fact about the story is that it is written in the form of narrations from different persons thus exploring their different personalities as well as perspectives. My personal favorite is the narrative by Gabriel Betteredge whose observant yet humorous narrative is truly endearing to the readers. The Moonstone has its fair share of romance, adventure and mystery with a very fitting climax. Despite being a very long story, we can never lose interest and it is a very brilliantly written detective novel.
