Kahani ek raat kee..

>Do diwane shahar mein, raat mein aur dopahar mein aabodana dhundhate hain...ek aashiyana dhundhate hai. This hindi song in husky voice of *bhupinder *sums up this movie in 1 line..

When I have summed up the movie in 1 line why the hell am I writing the whole review.. hmm need a reason right.. reason is.. since there is no review posted on it on MS.. I mouthpadded and got it listed so need to post too and above all it’s a GOLDIE HAWN movie.. she has hardly acted in a handful of movies over such a long career.. and also its about NY… a place adopted by me till recently as my home..

We all have in our life moved from one city to another and many cities just embrace us and we adopt it and the city adopts us but sometimes we just feel out of towners..

I had felt the same with Chennai.. never able to relate to it and become a chennaite.. I was always an outsider there..  but this story is not about Chennai.. its about the big apple.. now living in this city for sometime I can relate to it.. it has a pull, an energy.. which you can get pulled into or can be scary, especially the underbelly which is exposed at night. if you are rubbed the wrong way.. so what does one does when he is planning to move out of NY to a countryside… is nostalgic.. is contemplating... lands up in a hotel over a weekend and has nothing to do.. Except to look for apartments online as the weather is less then decent outside.. so once again I start switching channels and land up on a channel showing a movie of my fav star and NY… watch it.. and here is the review.. Thanks USA (not the country.. the channel network) for showing me one more movie of my fav star..

Now imagine Steve Martin, Goldie Hawn and John Cleese in one movie.. what could be nearest.. Govinda, Chunky in Aankhen and david dhawan style comedy or Akshay, sunil shetty in a priyadarshan’s herapheri or to be precise phir herapheri… that means a lot of slapstick comedy…a buffoonry.. where you keep you brain aside and just watch and laugh..

The story starts with Henry (Steve) getting a high paying job offer in NY. While in actual he has lost his job and just can’t share this with his wife. So he takes a flight out of Iowa to NY and suddenly his wife Nancy(Goldie) joins him to surprise him.. and the fun starts, now the plane can’t land in New York and is rerouted to boston, luggage is lost and then the hotel reservation is messed up and to beat it.. their credit card was decined.. that too because his daughter has maxed it out with her attached card and all this happens in quick mins. There’s just nothing funny about it.. right.. there is the way the couple act and react.. now they have to spend a night in the city till the morning before he takes his interview.. here there tryst with the city starts.. a city they despise and they keep falling into situations.. and finally when the night is over..  they are no more outsiders.. they are also newyorkers..

Now the movie has its own moments.. but I have seen steve in better movies.. but he was classic in the scene after he was high on drugs.. and then he does the ad lib to get the job.. John cleese was excellent as a snobbish hotel manager for the world but is a cross dresser in his room and above all Goldie for her giggly self..  Surprisingly.. a movie where Goldie acts above 40’s and look her age..

I feel the movie was a disappointment when it was released as not heard much about it even though it has 3 people known for their comic timings.. but a good watch over DVD over a lazy weekend.

Some interesting scenes –

Goldie and Steve making out on park and mayor inaugurating a statue next to them.. and they come into public..

both chased by horse ridding police in central park

Steve’s return from jail where he has taken LSD thinking of it as asprin.

Goldie giving piece of mind to policeman and then giving sweet talks to hotel manager.

Steve offering Goldie the role of partner in his new advertising job.

TRIVIA –

*Released in 1999.

Runs for 90 mins and except few mins.. u run with it.

When googled came to know it’s a remake of 70’s movie of same name..

Cast –*

Steve Martin -(Henry Clark )

Goldie Hawn – (Nancy)

John Cleese (hotel manager- forgetting name now  Mr Mesault or something like that)

Mark McKinney, Oliver Hudson (in real also he is Goldie’s son) and ex Mayor of NY Rudy Giuliani in a guest appearance.
