This book is about two people who have been common-law married for a very long time, Jodi and Todd. And their marriage is a complete disaster, during their marriage Todd had numerous affairs and Jodi being the silent wife in this case has always gone along with the lies and deceit, and played the role of a good wife. They followed a domestic protocol, they eat and sleep together and as normal couple, and they really keep up the façade of their marriage even though the actual emotional core of it is completely gone and it is only two strangers living together in the same house. And this novel is essentially a study of their relationship and about the individual role of two characters the married couple played in it.
You do have to suspend your belief to some level to enjoy this novel since lot of the character’s choices do seem a bit far fetched or perhaps larger than life, and the choices they make are not something a rational, normal human being will make. You have to go along where the author takes it characters, otherwise you will not necessarily enjoy this one. This novel goes back and forth between the current situation as well as to flash back to the previous time in their marriage and as well as to the prior to the marriage and discusses who there were as individuals, during these different time periods, I found it to be a very interesting thing to read.
The characters are extremely unlikable, but the writing style makes it a delight to read.
This is the first and the last work of Harrison, since she died while this novel went in for publishing.
