The Statesman is the newspaper that I am reading for the past 25years.It is certainly among the best newspapers in the country. The USP of the paper is the quality of English that is written. In the Eastern part of India, in schools it is said that if one reads The Statesman regularly one can improve ones English. This paper is not for the people who would like a tabloid like the TOI...which is full of news what the socialites do in their spare time. Regular articles are written by professors from IIT and other very good Institutes in India. The paper is more than 125yrs old and it has kept its tradition of reporting facts as it is and calling a spade a spade.Such is the reporting of the Statesman that on several occasions goons from various political parties in Bengal have attacked its office and also staff members. There have also been cases of burning the newspaper..and supplying a different newspaper to houses in North Bengal which finally stopped as people refused the other newspaper after 2days of reading. This paper may not appeal to the young crowd as there is not much reporting of films and issues that concern them.Another issue is that there is very little advertisements of employement opportunities.....which is due to the reason that it is not sold as heavily as TOI or The Telegraph....but the editorial is 1000times better than the other newspapers, the only comparable editorial is of The Hindu. The reporting is also very balanced. The only issue with The Statesman is that it is not probably able to keep up pace with the marketing gimmicks that other newspapers employ......but the basic news is fantastic, definitely worth a read.
