Times of India of 21st July 2009 on page 13 carries a news report of knee-deep flooding in Konark Sun Temple. I have never been to Konark but I was saddened to read about the flooding. And then I had to do a double take. Because the caption of the accompanying picture says "people wading thro knee-deep water." But the picture actually shows people wading thro ankle-deep water!
But while the flood may only be ankle-deep, hype has certainly reached waist-high in the Times. What with that prominent headline announcing "Hillary Quotes TOI." Apparently the newspaper is falling rapidly short on self-confidence which is reflected in such self-important news headlines. Probably it is only reflecting the times of India. Only last week the paper was reassuring readers that Hillary was not visiting Pakistan, only India, because we are so "important." Yet so much news space was given to what Hillary thought, felt or smelt, about Pakistan!
