I happened to catch this movie in a DVD, I dont think this will hit the theatres atleast not in the smaller cities,
This is a hatkey movie, not for everyone, not therun of the mill story, that you would expect . the story is set in early 1800, 1815 to be precise, the civil war is yet to happen and in the southern states life was different then .the protogonist Danny Day Lewis is a oil prospector, and one of many during those hey days when American Culture was being defined in the southern states, where a man lived by the gun and his word, hard work, living of the land and made his fortunes by himsefl . He is a prospector with a vision and his conviction makes him one of the successful one, he lives the Great American Dream . and makes his people see iit, people who work with him. the movie explores human relations during those hard times,
The casting is great, D.D. Lewis does justice to his characterm he is simply magnificient in his potrayal of anOil Man as he calls himself in the movie, his son is his partner and we dont get to know much about his personal life, coz he keeps it like that "personal", he is a man of his principles, and loves nothing more than his son and oil, one of the early capitalists(before the term was probably even coined), but who loved his workers, and how he goes about his business, how he deals with his relations during periods of strife and mistaken identities,
without revealing too much of the plot, I strongly recommend this movie for movie buffs who are into serious cinema, the first 15 mins is without any dialogue, and just a potrayal of the main protogonists life. the sound track is superb, and the emotions are sublime,
The character of the priest and his rivalry and confrontations with DD Lewis is also well scripted and enacted, the script is crisp. and the action realistic,
Go watch this movie, if you like period cinema .
I gave it a 4 star rating.
