Hi
Can you tell others how to appreciate music? I think, to an extent "yes". Hasnt there been a time when a friend tells you with all excitement to check out a song and you after listening to it do find it good? Maybe it was just partly due to the music and mainly seeing the excitement of the friend.
Not all songs are catchy the first time you listen to it and not all catchy sounding songs turn out to be the long-time-favorites. There area few songs that need a little bit of patient listening to, and then you slowly start loving the song. To say differently, you just had the song to grow on you.
My tips to have the songs grow on you:
Be open to different styles of music:
The irish folk is great listening to- all the peppy, cheerful, jumpy kinda tunes with wonderful pipe instruments.!
(can try the band quilty.)
The spanish music especially the falmenco is powerful, mature, bold sounding
(can try listening to paco de lucia, john Mc laughlin, al di meola.)
I was checking out the portugalfado in youtube, just a few days back and it sounds wonderful.
Be open to different genres:
Various genres and sub genres have evolved over time. Different genres have a different ways of saying one thing. Just think about this, how many songs have revolved around the theme "loneliness" or"being far away." Where an alternative-rock has an accusing tone, metal has a tone with all attitude, classical rock does it all with notes, a blues expresses as if it is a talk with music behind, each genre has it s own way of saying a thing.
And different genres say different things.
Im reminded of this question in AR Rahmans interview yesterday - "Has your music changed from Roja to Slumdog millionare?" He says "Yes, earlier the themes were just love and patriotism. Nowadays Im given complex themes to compose music for. So the music changes. "
Yea. There are such complex themes being taken on and certain genres do certain themes better. A genre like psychedellic rock would take upa theme and put it out in the most complex way possible. There are twists and urns and the way the song changes one is not gonna be finding it catchy. They can only grow on the person.
Get to know more about the artist:
Getting to know more about the artist, you might develop a respect for the artist, and thatll make you enjoy the music more. I use the wiki:)
Tap your foot/ snap your finger:
Oh, I do a lot of snapping the fingers thinge(unconsciously.) My friends have a nice laugh at it!
(Tapping= "Enjoying the beats"
Humming="Enjoying the tune")
Can Interpret the song:
No song has one interpretation. You can interpret the song your own way. I was thinking "every breath you take" was a love song, my one friend says its about "stock market":) I saw the wiki and the real it had a different one! And the rock anthem "Stairway to heaven" - god! must have hundreds of interpretations.
Can find what the song is actually about:
This sometimes needs listening "over and over again" but its worth it.
Listen to the instruments too in the song:
Not the vocals alone. For an exercise you can try to tell which music is from which instrument.
So, well these are my tips:) Enjoy music! and yea do tell me if u liked reading this:) Comments are welcome:)
