Muffin top is one of the new English terms of 2005. It was there since mankind started wearing pants, but came to be recognized only after the emergence of low-waist jeans and trousers. It got it’s name after the famous confectionery preparation of the same name. The two have resemblance in looks.
Well, let’s define it. It’s the unruly roll of flesh hanging over low-waist jeans/ pants. For whatever reasons it’s more associated with women, though men have it too. The parts of this on the two sides of waist are lovingly called love handles for long. Yet, the entire thing(That is the entire fleshy roll) was named’Muffin top’ only recently.
Calcutta Times of The Times of India published the term a few days back on front page as one of the new terms to be recognized. Hence it shows that muffin top was deemed deserving as a coloquial term by the academia to be included in dictionary or similar materials.
