Hypotension in simple terms mean "low blood pressure".
Now tge question arises.how much low? .
The normal BP( blood pressure) reference is 120/80 mm of Hg( systolic range being 100-140 and diastolic range being 60-100) .
So if the blood pressure is less than 100/60, then the person will be deemed as hypotensive.
Some people may have their baseline itself low, so some such individuals may have their blood pressure below 100/60 and such individuals are absolutely normal.
Hypotension can be dangerous, like for example, you are lying down on your bed and somebody calls you and you suddenly get up and stand, you may feel giddy and may even fall down-this is called orthostatic hypotension. To prevent this it is advisable that you sit for a minute and then stand up or use a stick to stand up and support yourself. And also have plently of water as dehydration may cause hypotension inturn causing this.
The other aspect is shock.Patients may go into a thing called shock due to decrease in tissue perfusion( that is decrese in oxygen suppy to your body parts) due to hypotension.
This is caused due to many reasons like sepsis( infection) and heart failure causing a cardiogenic shock, severe bleeding in an accident causing lots of blood loss may cause haemorrhagic shock and even viral fevers like Dengue may cause a shock called as dengue shock syndrome.
