One book is all you need to be a world renowned author when that book is a master piece. And you do not get more deserving master piece than this book - "To Kill a Mocking Bird". Harper Lee has accomplished with this one book, what many have failed to do so even after a dozen - made herself a house hold name - and that in itself stands testimony to the book.
A quaint town, a middle aged lawyer and a pair of curious siblings; the stage is set for an intriguing story. The refreshing fact about the book is that it does not succeed on any particular point.
First there is the language itself. It simply flows effortlessly - more poetry and less prose. If you love the English language, then you will find yourself reaching the book just for the writing.
Then there is the story itself. When written in a paragraph (similar to what I am attempting to do) it may seem to be quite unimpressive. And if you expect twists and turns, a concrete plot and a decisive ending then you will be disappointed. It is set at a slow pace and follows the life of Atticus Finch; a widowed father of two who manages to balance his family and his lawyer career; and his two children, Scout and Jem Finch. Told from Scouts perspective the enthusiasm, curiosity and the innocence of a 6 year old shines through. You follow scout and her older brother Jem as they figure out the lessons in life - some they are taught by their father, others they learn the hard way. But don’t for a minute think of it as a children’s book. The issues dealt with range from racism, rape, gender roles and personal choices.
Third we come to the issues themselves. Dealt with subtly but still drives home the point - it is circumstances and personal choices which make us who we are. A balancing act accomplished with élan.
A great book for a long journey or a rainy day. But if you swear by detective novels and fast paced thrillers then be warned, this is your cup of tea. But on the other hand if your love of the language and intrigue for the human mind is greater then you will find your appetite satisfied.
